During the State of the Union address on Tuesday, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) held a sign that called out a racist social media post President Donald Trump recently shared of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.
The video, which was widely condemned by Democrats and Republicans, depicted the Obamas as apes. Trump eventually removed the video, though he declined to apologize for it. The president also claimed that he had only seen the beginning of the video and hadnt seen the racist frames of the clip.
Black people arent apes! Greens sign read. Green held the sign while Trump entered the House chamber and during the beginning of his speech.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) tried to take the sign from Green after seeing it, and Reps. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) and John McGuire (R-Va.) also attempted to block it from cameras line of sight. Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) tried to snatch it out of his hand, but Green dodged.

I expect that those (D)s who did choose to attend did so for "performative" reasons.

But today he defended Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who was escorted out of Trumps address last night after he held up a sign to the president reading: Black People Are Not Apes!
I thought the Democratic response was appropriately restrained and forceful at the same period of time, and that was obvious to anybody who was watching, Jeffries said as he kicked off House Democrats annual issues conference.
With respect to Rep. Greens response, it was both appropriate and restrained at the same period of time, Jeffries continued. Now, his message that he communicated was obviously on point, but it was far less profane than my reaction to the very same racist video that Donald Trump felt compelled to produce.
Trump sparked a firestorm this month when he posted a video on social media depicting former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes. After GOP backlash, Trump deleted the video, but he has refused to apologize.
