Ghislaine Maxwell invokes Fifth Amendment in House deposition

Source: MS NOW

(MS NOW) Convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell pleaded the Fifth Amendement virtually before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Monday as part of a high-profile inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein’s activities and the federal government’s handling of related files.

Maxwell is serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for her role in aiding Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls and is in custody at a federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas.

The co-conspirator was expected to invoke the Fifth Amendment on a “blanket basis” and refuse to answer substantive questions during the deposition, according to a letter from Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., sent to Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky.

“Ghislaine Maxwell took the fifth and refused to answer any questions. This is obviously very disappointing,” Comer told reporters on Monday morning. “We had many questions to ask about the crime she and Epstein committed, as well as questions about potential co-conspirators. We sincerely want to get to the truth to the American people and justice for the survivors. That’s what this investigation is about.”

1. Why plead the 5th if she's already been convicted and double jeopardy protects her?

Unless, of course, there are other crimes that weren't covered by her conviction....

6. Oh, there most definitely were. The majority of her sentence term is for trafficking Carolyn A to Epstein

That's the only major charge that stuck against her in 2022 and is basically why she's still in prison now.

She was Epstein's biggest single recruiter and many other girls have said she recruited them for abuse by Epstein as well (and that she participated therein). So unless all Congress was going to ask her about was Carolyn A (unlikely) it should've been 100% expected she'd plead the 5th. In fact I think I read that her lawyers (or maybe it was just her, not positive she has lawyers still) said she was going to plead the 5th unless granted blanket immunity, which apparently did not happen.

Which means the whole interview was basically a charade. However, the dude she really cares about e.g. the one with the pardon pen I'm sure took notice of her display of omerta.

And got some brownie points from Trump for rubbing some noses in their own stupid shit of thinking they would get information. She showed voters how stupid GOP pols are, AGAIN.

Well, not really. If she'd done anything else then I'd be shocked.

Her presidential pardon hinges upon silence, after all.

11. Ghislaine Maxwell appeals for clemency from Trump as she declines to answer questions from lawmakers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ghislaine Maxwell, the former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, declined to answer questions from House lawmakers in a deposition Monday, but indicated that if President Donald Trump ended her prison sentence, she was willing to testify that neither he nor former President Bill Clinton had done anything wrong in their relationships with Epstein.

The House Oversight Committee had wanted Maxwell to answer questions during a video call to the federal prison camp in Texas where she’s serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking, but she invoked her Fifth Amendment rights to avoid answering questions that would be self-incriminating. She’s come under new scrutiny as lawmakers try to investigate how Epstein, a well-connected financier, was able to sexually abuse underage girls for years.

Amid a reckoning over Epstein’s abuse that has spilled into nations around the globe, lawmakers are searching for anyone who was connected to Epstein and may have facilitated his abuse. So far, the revelations have shown how both Trump and Clinton spent time with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, but they have not been credibly accused of wrongdoing.

During the closed-door deposition Monday, an attorney for Maxwell told lawmakers that if Trump granted her clemency, she would be willing to testify that neither Trump nor Clinton were culpable for wrongdoing.
