CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The United States hit Venezuela with a “large-scale strike” early Saturday and said its president, Nicolás Maduro, had been captured and flown out of the country after months of stepped-up pressure by Washington — an extraordinary nighttime operation announced by President Donald Trump on social media hours after the attack.

Multiple explosions rang out and low-flying aircraft swept through Caracas, the capital, as Maduro’s government immediately accused the United States of attacking civilian and military installations. The Venezuelan government called it an “imperialist attack” and urged citizens to take to the streets.

It was not immediately clear who was running the country, and Maduro’s whereabouts were not immediately known. Trump announced the developments on Truth Social shortly after 4:30 a.m. ET. Under Venezuelan law the vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, would take power. There was no confirmation that had happened, though she did issue a statement after the strike.

“We do not know the whereabouts of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores,” Rodriguez said. “We demand proof of life.”

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ban on U.S. commercial flights in Venezuelan airspace because of "ongoing military activity" ahead of the explosions in Caracas. There was no immediate comment from the U.S. about its role, the targets or the purpose of the strikes.

The explosions in Caracas sent people rushing into the streets, while others took to social media to report hearing and seeing the blasts. It was not immediately clear if there were casualties. The apparent attack lasted less than 30 minutes, but it was unclear if more actions were ahead. Two hours later, parts of the city remained without power, but vehicles moved freely.

Smoke could be seen rising from the hangar of a military base in Caracas, while another military installation in the capital was without power. "The whole ground shook. This is horrible. We heard explosions and planes," said Carmen Hidalgo, a 21-year-old office worker, her voice trembling. She was walking briskly with two relatives, returning from a birthday party. "We felt like the air was hitting us."

The FAA's warning, known as "Notice to Airmen," came shortly after one in the morning on the east coast of the U.S. It warned all commercial and private U.S. pilots that the airspace over Venezuela and the small island nation of Curacao, just off the coast of the country to the north, was off-limits "due to safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing military activity."

the very first news source to msm is only the president, with no corroboration from other govt sources.

What we read, see, and hear of facts will be from on the ground in VZ, and secondarily from our government, which will be in news blackout with only the occupant as the so-called source.

This all seems to fit with the historical surveillance capitalism system now in place, begun in the 1300's "Age of Exploration, continuing conquest proclaimed by "Divine Right of Kings." Today, in the last century, that same right of invasion and conquest was digitally in place by the progenitor of human invasion and conquest, Google. These folks are trump's digital palace guard. If they help ferret out the whole truth of this scenario for the public good beyond what we get as 'news,' I'll be surprised.

Trump said Nov. 28 that he planned to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez. A White House official and Hernandez's attorney, Renato Stabile, confirmed Dec. 2 that the pardon has been issued. Stabile said Hernandez was released early Dec. 2 from a federal prison, where he was serving a 45-year sentence "for cocaine importation and related weapons offenses," according to the Justice Department.

Hernandez was convicted in March of 2024 after a three-week jury trial in New York City. He was "at the center of one of the largest and most violent drug-trafficking conspiracies in the world," helping to bring more than 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S., the Justice Department said in a news release last year after his conviction.

The US is now involved in another regime change. Will this go on for a decade or more like the last two regime changes?

we've lost our moral compass - we are now truly an authoritarian country and one that the world is seemingly doing nothing to stop.

Wants a dictatorship and will turn over the oil fields to pedo Trump? She's a "free" trader who believes in vulture capitalism. She no fan of free and fair elections either.

I think that according to Venezuelan law the vice president is the next person in line of leadership.

Machado is very much like Pinochet except without the military experience and blood thirst.....well, not so sure about the blood thirst.

Has there been proof of life for Maduro or his wife? How many Venezuelans have died today?

The real winner only won because Maduro wouldn't let Machado run. Whoever we give it to should only hold power until there can be an election. Don't know how many Venezuelans died. The whole thing was wrong. I'm only suggesting a next step.

74. Well their Supreme Court said she couldn't run

They have laws that prevent criminals from running for president unlike in the US.

She was charged with conspiracy to assinate Maduro. And then there were some deaths she orchestrated during a protest that their Supreme Court ruled disqualified her. Unlike in the US where you can be found guilty for fraud and involved in sedition yet still run for president. But yeah, blame Maduro for that. It's like blaming the DOJ for Trump's fraud and sedition.

76. Have you looked at what the Venezuelan Conservative
Sun Jan 4, 2026, 11:09 AM

Party has done? They are no better than the US Republican Party. They have attempted assassinations, riots to stop political action, deaths from conservative instigated mayhem.

This is always the playbook when filthy-rich conservatives don't get their way. It gets even worse when they do get their way. Just look at pedo Trump.

If it did I don't trust it. Maduro was a dictator who regained power by election theft. He also was a commie who put their economy into disaster.

78. Socialism in Venezuela has a long history
Sun Jan 4, 2026, 03:14 PM

So, not communism. Communism is not a popular economic system in Venezuela. But socialism does have a foothold.

You know who I don't trust? The media when they speak or write about Venezuela. They all repeat the same talking points. They all talk to the same Venezuelans who are pining away for the good old days when oil corporation took all the wealth from the oil fields and ran the Venezuelan government, where they treated Venezuelans, especially the indigenous people, like slaves.

It's like here in the US. Every media outlet was going on and on about Biden being old. But somehow pedo Trump's psychotic dementia was ignored constantly. The media all repeats itself with the same stories and no one questions it. Why are they so busy busting Maduro's chops when the Saudis rule like dictators and cutting off people's hands is a common practice?

You know who else is a dictator who regained power by election theft? Pedo Trump. Maduro is much better than pedo Trump ever was. At least he doesn't rape 12 year old girls or invade foreign countries.
