Hakeem Jeffries Calls for Investigation Into Trump Health

Source: Newsweek

Jan 02, 2026 at 02:27 PM EST

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, voiced support for a congressional investigation into the health of President Donald Trump. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment via email.

Why It Matters

Trump, who is 79, was the oldest person to become president when he returned to office last January, and while he maintains that he's in perfect health, questions have emerged about his age. A new report from The Wall Street Journal highlighted several of his alleged signs of age, including delicate skin and difficulty hearing.
What To Know

Jeffries, a staunch Trump critic who could become the next House speaker if Democrats retake control of Congress in the November midterm elections, was asked about whether there should be investigations into Trump’s health during an interview with Aaron Parnas. Parnas posted a clip of the interview to X on Friday.

Jeffries said the White House is “definitively” not being transparent about Trump’s health and that Representative James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who leads the House Oversight Committee, needs to “answer for” questions about an investigation. “I don’t believe that this is something that should wait until the American people give Democrats the majority in the aftermath of the November election later on this year,” he said.

Make it clear that if the Republicans don't come clean about Trump and his various diseases including his mental problems, this will be a front and center campaign issue and it will not be pretty.

Republicans already have to answer for protecting a pedophile and serial rapist and preteen sex abuser. Do they also want to have to be accountable for hiding the truth about Trump's decline into vegetable state?

shall have access to his health records is not going anywhere. Instead, why don't you release the autopsy report on why Ds lost the 2024 election -- you know the report that you authorized Ken Martin to conduct and now refuse to release it.

People inside the Beltway are always thinking about votes and legislation and alliances and loyalty. The problems we Face are not going to be solved, for the most part, through slow moving legislation. The big results come from public pressure campaigns outside of the Beltway. And that is what Jeffries seems to be touching on now. I hope he realizes that, and gives his leadership more of a focus on the public pressure.

If Jeffries wanted to ‘give his leadership more of a focus on the public pressure’ then he’d be having press briefings every day correcting the lies that this unlawful administration is relentlessly putting out. Why isn’t he? And why are they not releasing the 2024 election report? That would certainly generate some buzz.

They're surely must be others in Congress who understand this and could do a much more aggressive job at bringing the public along with us. I don't understand why there was always a presumption that people like Jeffrey's should be able to keep his job indefinitely. Change can be very good for an organization like this.

I just don’t understand why Congressional Democrats have not been more aggressively vocal regarding the illegal and amoral actions of this administration. God knows there’s no shortage of things to talk about. Kudos to Bernie and AOC for doing their best. And there are some regulars on the talk shows. But where are the rest? From what I’ve seen, most Americans are astonishingly uninformed and apathetic regarding our Government leaders. They need to be literally shocked into giving a damn about who is running our country.

Trump is the healthiest man ever to walk the face of the earth. He’ll be more than happy to prove it, in a verifiable manner of course. And republicans from coast to coast will cheer the results.

Just asking. If there's no such requirement, why does Leader Jeffries think an investigation is in order? Would we have been OK if Speaker Johnson had suggested the Congress investgate the state of President Biden's health? Or is this one of those situations where we can do it, but they can't?

Just seems weird and abnormal to me.

release the results of their annual physicals. I think Presidents share this information to show that they are healthy enough to do this demanding job. If I am wrong about this, someone can correct me.

When Eisenhower had a major heart attack in 1955, there was no formal way for the Vice-President to assume Presidential duties on a temporary basis. Nixon did step in and assume many duties. In general, people were pleased with the way Nixon handled things. But this incident was the basis for showing the need for the 25th amendment. This is the mechanism to provide for temporary succession if a President is incapacitated, so Jeffries is not out of line. Eisenhower recovered and won a second election. Maybe the current occupant of the Oval Office should be taken out via the 25th amendment. Maybe a more permanent solution is in order, like impeachment. Maybe pigs will fly.

I don't know if this covers what you are asking for, but I think it is possible that an investigation might show that TSF is not healthy enough to continue as President. Then the 25th amendment could be invoked. Again, I won't risk getting a crick in my neck looking upward for flying pigs.

Impeachment? 25th Amendment? I'm not sure, and I don't know if either is the right choice, or if either would work.
