US court blocks Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs
Source: Reuters
NEW YORK (Reuters) -A U.S. federal court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs from going into effect, ruling that the president overstepped his authority by imposing across-the-board duties on imports from nations that sell more to the United States than they buy.
The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade said the U.S. Constitution gives the U.S. Congress exclusive powers to regulate commerce with other countries that are not trumped by the president's emergency powers to safeguard the U.S. economy.
The lawsuit, filed by the nonpartisan Liberty Justice Center on behalf of five small U.S. businesses that import goods from countries targeted by the duties, was the first major legal challenge to Trump's tariffs.
The companies - which range from a New York wine and spirits importer to a Virginia-based maker of educational kits and musical instruments - have said the tariffs will hurt their ability to do business.
The lawsuit is one of seven court challenges to Trump's tariff policies, along with challenges from 13 U.S. states and other groups of small businesses.

Some people say its just not a meal without ketchup. While enjoying the tomatoey goodness of ketchup, did you ever wonder where it all came from and when it got started?
Well, according to the Del Monte Corporation, its a secret from the Far East. Catsup (different brands have different spellings) originated in Asia, where its name was derived from ket-tsiap (Chinese), ketchup (Malayan), or kachiap (Thai), meaning a spicy sauce of or for fish. History indicates Portuguese traders took tomato seeds to Macao, a southeast island of China.

(404 posts)I know it sounds crazy but a good deep recession will stop this MAGA movement..; Saving them from the consequences of their actions will not change their minds but being out of work and losing the family farm will..
I know its harsh but people have given their lives for democracy..and this would be a relatively small price to pay.

(62 posts)Trade deals from the threat of tariffs are the endgame.
Trump can't have trade deal victories without the threat of tariffs, so Trump automatically loses without the ability to have these trade wars involving tariffs. Trump is going to have to go to congress if this holds, and Trump's bitcoin plan to have dollar backed or replaced by bitcoin would be in trouble too.
You see bitcoin is hyperdeflationary. You can't print more, there is a fixed supply of 21 million to produce fake scarcity of a worthless product. That fake scarcity is what makes you feel like you are missing out on a limited asset and to jump on the bandwagon. Dollars are invented with debt, loans, etc. Take out a loan, new money is invented. Pay back the loan, money is destroyed. bitcoin is limited. Meaning if bitcoin is the US currency, the US has to run trade surpluses with nations or else the entire US supply of bitcoin slowly drains out of the US and the US is left with no money, as you can't print it, it is fixed to 21 million. So before going to bitcoin, Trump is waging economic trade wars with nations so the US can go to bitcoin once nations have trade parity with the US.
Trump is not destroying the economy for ego or anti-free trade sentiment. It is more than that. It is the big tech billionare bitcoin agenda.

(169 posts)The MAGAS will not learn a thing unless maybe it actually affects them. Even though most will still believe Krasnov when he says gas is downtown $1.98 per gallon, even as they are filling up at $3+ per gallon.
If there is a deep recession maybe half will finally get it.

Not just a recession, but millions of cult worshipers thrown off their health insurance and can't afford their meds. People who voted for him getting deported. Maga idiots losing their jobs. A lot of innocent people would be hurt, but it would mean the end of the repug party for generations. And the trials would last a decade or more.

The court ruled in favor of a permanent injunction, grinding Trumps global tariffs to a halt before deals with most other trading partners have even been reached. That means the bulk but not all of Trumps tariffs are put in a standstill.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

Federal court says Trump doesnât have the power to impose tariffs unilaterally

A panel of judges on the U.S. Court of International Trade found the tariffs were unlawful and permanently vacated them.
Since Trump announced sweeping tariffs on more than 50 countries in April, his administration has faced half a dozen lawsuits challenging the president's ability to impose tariffs without the approval of Congress.
The Court of International Trade issued its ruling in a case brought by a group of five small businesses who argued that Trump's tariffs are an "unprecedented power grab."
Lawyers for the small businesses alleged that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act -- which Trump invoked to impose the tariffs -- does not give the president the right to issue "across-the-board worldwide tariffs," and that Trump's justification for the tariffs was invalid.

Then Canada would not forced into making a deal with TFG.
And the list continues of the many nations that would have been forced into trade deals for Trump victory after Trump victory that no longer have to make deals with Trump. It means the economic suffering was for naught. And voters are going to see that.

I believe getting rid of the courts... and constitutional law... is on the P2025 mandate. And lord knows trump wants to rid himself of all these courts and judges.
I see him trying to pull a Netanyahu and attempting to disband them in some way. Wonder if that would get a rise out of the people like it did in Israel. Stopped Netanyahu... Wonder if it would work against trump in the same way.

Calling him TACO (Trump always Chickens Out), may make things worse.
Authoritarians do not like being the butt of jokes.
He is not a rational person.
There is a historical lesson.
In the 1980s, he owned the USFL New Jersey Generals.
The league had moderate success and future hall of famers like Reggie White.
But Trump's narcissism killed the league.
He and some of the other owners voted to move their schedule to the Fall compete directly against the NFL.
Some think that they were trying to force a merger between the NFL and USFL.
The league shutdown a few years after this move.
