Emmanuel Macron's wife Brigitte Macron appears to shove his face upon arrival in Hanoi

Hanoi, Vietnam — French President Emmanuel Macron's office on Monday downplayed an incident in which his wife appeared to push his face away as he arrived in Vietnam to begin a Southeast Asian tour.

Video shot by The Associated Press in Hanoi on Sunday evening shows Macron's plane door opening, revealing him. His wife Brigitte's arms then emerge from the left of the open doorway, she places both hands on her husband's face and gives it a shove.

The president appears startled but quickly recovers and turns to wave through the open door. She remains concealed by the aircraft body, making it impossible to see her facial expression or body language.

They proceed down the staircase for the official welcome by Vietnamese officials, though Brigitte Macron does not take her husband's offered arm.

I’ve had girlfriends who would make a gesture towards my face without actually touching me. That might have been her telling him to pay attention to the crowd. Maybe she was drunk? Maybe they both were?

The expression on his face wasn't a smile, and he went back (off-camera) to say something to her. The smile didn't appear until he walked down the stairs.

Look at his face at 16 seconds, right after it happened. A combination of stunned and furious.

And claimed that was his one emotion. He may have looked furious just for the camera. I have been on DU for over 20 years and I’m not blind. My statement stands.

If she weren't French, she might have been prosecuted for having sex with her, then, 16 year old student.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that she is abusing him now, but things between them started out that way.

Depending on the state in the US, the legal age of consent is either 16, 17, or 18. But I don't think having sex with a student is legal anywhere here (maybe college?).

Relative to comments down thread
"In Hawaii, the age of consent is sixteen (16) generally, or the age of consent is between fourteen (14) and fifteen (15) when either the other person is less than five (5) years older or when the other person is legally married to the person between the ages of fourteen (14) and fifteen (15). See Haw. Rev. Stat. § 707-732."

Macron's office initially denied the authenticity of the images, evoking the possible use of artificial intelligence, before they were confirmed as genuine and Macron responded.

"In these three videos I took a tissue, shook someone's hand and just joked with my wife, as we do quite often. Nothing more," Macron said.

The "joking" involve her pushing his face, clearly. His office have not helped by trying to claim the images were fake.
