SEOULThree senior North Korean officials were detained over the failed launch of the countrys newest warship, an accident that has drawn the wrath of leader Kim Jong Un and been called an unpardonable crime.
The 41-year-old dictator considers a modernized naval fleet so vital to North Koreas future that he attended the ships Wednesday unveiling in person. But Kim witnessed a calamity: One part of the 5,000-ton destroyer made it off the quay, while the other did not.
The vessel remains partially submerged at a shipyard in the northeastern coastal city of Chongjin. Blue tarps are draped over the warship, satellite imagery shows.
Kim blamed the mishap on absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism. In recent days, public prosecutors and naval experts have hauled in the shipyards manager and inspected the ship, above and below water.
