Social Security wrongly told disabled people and some seniors their benefits ended, causing alarm

Source: CBS News

April 8, 2025 / 9:50 AM EDT

The Social Security Administration last week wrongly informed some recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the federal program that provides financial assistance to disabled Americans and low-income senior citizens, that they were no longer receiving benefits.

The agency's website informed some SSI recipients they are "currently not receiving payments," according to an April 7 letter from senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Kelly of Arizona to Social Security Administration Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek.

The payment history and all data about benefits for SSI recipients had also vanished, they wrote, adding that they received multiple reports from constituents about the error. "In my 50 years of work on Social Security and SSI, I have never heard of this happening before," said Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, an advocacy group for the program, of the SSI error.

Chris Hubbard, whose 37-year-old disabled adult son relies on the program to pay for his group home, told CBS MoneyWatch she became aware of the problem on March 31, when people in a Facebook group for mothers of autistic children flagged the problem.

No attempts to reassure us or tell us what is going on.

I'm very grateful for Sen Warren and Tim Walz and Cory Booker and a few others who are trying to stop this insanity.

But there needs to be LOUD AND ANGRY WORDS FROM FORMER PRESIDENTS, TOO!

Just went to the Social Security website and the Home tab doesn’t take you anywhere and neither does Other Services tab. I had to hit the button to download forms, log out then log back in and they were the only thing on my screen. This was from my IPhone

8. Social Security Payments for April Not Being Received
Wed Apr 9, 2025, 03:02 AM

Getting reports from different people who receive their SSA Direct Deposit Payment the Second Wednesday, that they are not receiving their payments for April on time. Recipients for various number of years, no change in address or bank or any other personal changes. Something is going on.

10. Update Info

Overnight apparently all that I have been in contact with have received their payments. Their bank accounts never showed anything pending, it was just there this morning. However, there are problems signing into their account for some. One having trouble even getting to the site. Another 2 when they try to sign in get the message that their info isn't recognized. One is going to try to create a new ID or whatever account. Are all old accounts being phased out? All had accounts prior to 2021. Thank you for the info you give on here.

11. About a year or so ago, SS and OPM suggested people start exclusively using a "central" login option - Login.gov

https://www.login.gov/

(alternately people could use ID.me - https://www.id.me/)

They sent out a million emails about it.

I just started getting SS last year but had already created a Login.gov account when they started switching over to that instead of my logging directly into OPM for my federal annuity info. They then applied (linked) my Login.gov login info to my SS account and I was good to go.

(ETA - and for clarification, I DID have a different account that I had used for SS over the years but that was, I assume, phased out and replaced with my "Login.gov" account once I linked the Login.gov account to SS)
