The North Carolina Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a state Court of Appeals ruling that would require more than 60,000 voters to verify their identity and registration for ballots cast in the race between Republican Jefferson Griffin and Democratic Incumbent Justice Allison Riggs for a seat on the state's high court.
On April 4, the North Carolina Court of Appeals had ruled in favor of Griffin's election challenge in what's long been the only undecided race from the November 2024 general election, bolstering Griffin's efforts to disqualify more than 65,000 ballots and potentially unseat Riggs.
Two recounts have confirmed Riggs' narrow margin of victory against Griffin. Still, Griffin, who serves on the Court of Appeals, has alleged multiple ballot irregularities, like incomplete voter registrations, that he claims violate state law and cost him the election. After the North Carolina State Board of Elections dismissed his complaints, Griffin filed suit.
In February, a Wake County Superior Court judge backed the state boards decision, writing that it was not in violation of constitutional provisions, was not in excess of statutory authority or jurisdiction of the agency, was made upon lawful procedure, and was not affected by other error of law.
