Jamie Dimon sounds the alarm bell on tariffs

Source: CNN

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has issued a blunt warning about President Donald Trump’s tariff policy: It threatens to raise prices, drive the global economy into a downturn and weaken America’s standing in the world. “The recent tariffs will likely increase inflation and are causing many to consider a greater probability of a recession,” Dimon warned in his annual letter to shareholders. “Whether or not the menu of tariffs causes a recession remains in question, but it will slow down growth.”

Dimon, one of the world’s most influential business leaders, said America’s “extraordinary standing” in the world was built on the strength of its economy, military and morals. But tariffs and Trump’s “America First” foreign policy could undermine the United States’ special position in the world. “America First is fine, as long as it doesn’t end up being America alone,” Dimon said. “If the Western world’s military and economic alliances were to fragment, America itself would inevitably weaken over time,” he said.

Dimon also pointed out that these forces are inextricably linked. “It is extremely important to recognize that security and economics are interconnected – “economic” warfare has caused military warfare in the past,” he wrote.

In past letters, Dimon has warned about geopolitical factors, such as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, which he said threatened to send powerful shockwaves throughout the global economy. But rarely has Dimon been so blunt about a single US economic policy. Dimon has been largely silent about Trump’s tariff policy since he told CNBC in January that, if the president’s tariffs helped boost US manufacturing while causing a little bit of inflation, then people should “get over it.” In his letter on Monday, Dimon acknowledged that “damaging trade practices,” especially from China, have hurt workers.

Trump is doing exactly what he said, and what P2025 said. Where was Dimon with a warning when it could actually make a difference?

F that asshole. He is just unhappy now because he and his fellow billionaires are losing money. Get used to it. The economy always crashes under Republicans.

oligarchs actually are, and he wrote the following about CEO Jamie Dimon:

"Even relatively sensible business leaders like Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan
Chase tend to stumble when they try to play economist. Does anyone
remember Dimon proclaiming in 2014 that we couldn’t restore full
employment because American workers didn’t have the right skills? Five
years later the unemployment rate was below 4 percent.

Biden implemented tons of harmful tariffs. We all had to pretend like it was rational policy directed to a specific, achievable aim. it's ok to admit it now. Tariffs are dogshit.
EV and solar tariffs are dogshit. They worsen climate change.
Steel tariffs are dogshit. They make building things in the US harder, they do not protect jobs, they cause job losses.
Lumber tariffs on Canada are dogshit. They make building homes more expensive and, believe it or not, this is not how you treat a friend and ally, even if it's a Democrat doing it.

Over and over and over again. The party wants to insist that when we do it, tariffs aren't an economic disaster and an affront to our friends and allies. Ok, target adversarial nations and provide a non-economic justification. Dimon does that and what do the people here do? Oh, he's a Trumper! (No). He loves tariffs! (Definitely not).

You literally have the leader of the United Autoworkers praising tariffs and celebrating Trump and somehow he gets off scot free because of cultural aesthetics.
