Texas county that swung to Trump grapples with immigration crackdown after bakery is targeted

LOS FRESNOS, Texas — Leonardo Baez and Nora Avila-Guel’s bakery in the Texas community of Los Fresnos is a daily stop for many residents to share gossip over coffee and pick up cakes and pastries for birthdays, office parties or themselves.

When Homeland Security Investigations agents showed up at Abby’s Bakery in February and arrested the owners and eight employees, residents of Los Fresnos were shocked. Abby’s Bakery doesn’t employ violent criminals and Baez and Avila-Guel are not the people who border czar Tom Homan calls the “worst of the worst” and says are the priority for mass deportations.

“I was surprised because I know that they’re not taking advantage of the people,” Esteban Rodriguez, 43, said after pulling into the bakery’s parking lot to discover it was closed. “It was more like helping out people. They didn’t have nowhere to go, instead of them being on the streets.”

The reaction in the town of 8,500 residents may show the limits of support for President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in a majority Hispanic region dotted with fields of cotton, sugarcane and red grapefruit where Republicans made gains in last year’s elections. Cameron County voted for a GOP president for the first time since 2004. For neighboring Starr County, it was the first time since 1896.

AAs protested for DECADES about "driving while black", "walking while black", being targeted by zip code and/or by first name (as the surnames were often not-indicative due to the long history of slavery and taking on the owner's surnames) and even any "dialect" detected when communicating by phone.

There were yawns out of some communities, including immigrant communities. They looked down on AAs with disdain, believing the racist bullshit being spewed. There was little or no comprehension about how this country operates with its "code talk", designations of "token" or "honorary" groups, and how, on a whim, it can turn on anyone in an instant, including those "token" / "honorary" groups.

Welcome to (the real) America.

Well how did that work out? Just couldn’t bring themselves to vote for the nice, competent lady who had a black father and an Indian mother.

What on earth did they think that meant if not local workers, restaurant and other business owners, people who have been a part of communities for many years? I suppose they thought he would only deport black migrants since he is a racist and hates them.

There was a widespread .... myth or meme in Latin communities in the US that Trump, once elected, was only going to deport the bad guys, the criminals, the gang members, not the good people.

Well what cop ever searches out dangerous desperate criminals? That's for specialists and lunatics. You can meet your quota going and picking up peaceful types whose papers aren't in order, who aren't going to extract the full price for messing with them.
