Trump administration slashes division in charge of 26,000 U.S. artworks

"The fate of holdings dating to before the Civil War is uncertain after the dismissal of most workers in the General Services Administrations fine arts and preservation units.
The future of a vast collection of public artwork is in doubt as the Trump administration plans to fire workers who preserve and maintain more than 26,000 pieces owned by the U.S. government, including paintings and sculptures by renowned artists, some dating to the 1850s.
Fine arts and historic preservation workers at the General Services Administration told The Washington Post that at least five regional offices were shuttered last week and that more than half of the divisions approximately three dozen staff members were abruptly put on leave pending their terminations. Workers expressed fear that the cuts will threaten a collection of precious art housed in federal buildings across the country, including Alexander Calders 1974 Flamingo at the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago and Michael Lantzs 1942 Man Controlling Trade outside the Federal Trade Commission building in D.C.
.... According to former staffers, the agency is looking to end its lease for a storage facility in Northern Virginia that holds hundreds of paintings and sculptures, including pieces sponsored by the Depression-era Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program responsible for some of the nations most iconic images. Federal government watchdogs over the years have sought to reclaim WPA artworks, some of which were sold on eBay. When the works were commissioned, artists were paid as much as $42 a week in 1934, or roughly $1,000 a week in todays dollars, for finished pieces..."

Don't forget, this is the asshole who destroyed the Art Deco friezes from the Bonwit Teller Building that was knocked down to build the horrible Trump Tower, after he promised to save them.

More likely they will be destroyed and lost forever.
Art, along with cute puppies, are lost on these people.

(707 posts)I don't believe they're capable of appreciating love of art, puppies, other humans, true beauty. They don't understand the term, "you can't take it with you" . The most valuable thing any of us have is time. You can't make more of it and when you die, your memories die with you. These are very damaged people.

(13,130 posts)Trump has replaced the board of directors for the Kennedy Center with loyalists who voted Trump as chairman. He is going to approve only performers who meet his standards to perform there.
Ric Grenell, Trump's former ambassador to Germany, has been named interim executive director and has said his goal is to "make art great again." (ycch!!!)
Since Trump took over as chairman of the Kennedy Center board, there have been more than 20 show cancellations or postponements.
One of the first performances to be canceled was the Marine Corps Band -- established in 1798, by an Act of Congress -- which had planned a concert featuring high school band members from diverse backgrounds. Also known as "The President's Own," the Marine Band is committed to diversity and inclusion in its ranks and performances.
The Broadway musical "Hamilton" has canceled its planned performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in response to recent changes in the center's leadership.
During the Nazi regime, art was used as a tool for propaganda and to promote the ideals of the Third Reich. The Nazis confiscated and looted countless artworks from museums, galleries, and private collections, particularly targeting works by Jewish artists and those deemed "degenerate" or contrary to their ideology.
Trump is following an established game plan for turning a country into an autocracy.
