New York fires more than 2,000 prison guards as it declares strike is over

State says most prison guards returned to work after deal to end wildcat stoppage, but holdouts were dismissed

New York fired more than 2,000 prison guards on Monday for failing to return to work after an illegal work stoppage – carried out amid fallout over the high-profile deaths of two detained people as well as reports of violence by guards.

But the state said enough officers had come back on the job to declare the wildcat strike over.

“After 22 days of an illegal strike, the governor and I are happy to report it is now ended,” the New York corrections department commissioner, Daniel Martuscello, said during a virtual press briefing.

The state and the guards’ union struck a new deal to end the strike this weekend, but it was contingent on at least 85% of staff returning to work by Monday morning. Although the number returning fell short of the 85% goal, Martuscello said the state would honor the deal’s overtime provisions, along with some others.

I read the article where comment was requested from the union and a response was not received. Similar to Reagan and Air 24601 Mar 11 #2

That is not good for anyone involved in the debacle that is Riker's Island.

Traffic Controllers because the strikers were government employees and their positions are essential for safety.

if the strike was not sanctioned by the International Union, then it was a wild cat strike.
