Sens. Josh Hawley and Cory Booker reintroduce bipartisan child labor bill

Source: NBC News

Sens. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., are reintroducing legislation on Monday that would bar companies from receiving federal contracts if they’ve been found to have made serious, repeated or pervasive violations of child labor laws. The senators reintroduced the bill ahead of the confirmation vote scheduled for Monday evening for Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the former Republican House member from Oregon who is President Donald Trump’s choice to serve as labor secretary.

Hawley and Booker's legislation would require companies seeking federal contracts to disclose child labor violations by the company or any subcontractors during the prior three years. It would also require the labor secretary to compile a list of companies that are ineligible for federal contracts based on any violations.

“Companies that illegally employ children should not be rewarded with lucrative federal government contracts that make corporations millions,” Hawley, who raised child labor concerns during Chavez-DeRemer’s confirmation hearing, said in a statement. “This bipartisan legislation would hold companies accountable for engaging in child labor exploitation and rightfully ensure offenders face consequences.”

The push comes after a number of American companies were found to have employed young teenagers illegally and in dangerous jobs, as investigations from NBC News and The New York Times found. Many of those children who were illegally employed were unaccompanied migrants who entered the U.S. in recent years.

…told a fairy-tale of child labor like this (cue the violins) …

If a kid’s parents were working but unable to feed the family, it would make that kid so proud to bring home a salary to help out their family.
Not to worry about their schooling — if they work the night-shift, there would be plenty of time for book-larnin’ for that brave child.

I shall wipe a tear from my eye for the big heart of that fine Christian woman.

Do not be fooled. The jobs in question are frequently very dangerous, as well as exhausting. The right-wing wants legal child labor back, but meat processors and such aren’t waiting for over a century of laws to be overturned.

If David Duke were to support a tax credit fort a first time homeowner, I wouldn't change my position out of spite.
