Canada Says New Economic and Security Partners Needed Due to U.S. Policy Shift

OTTAWACanadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said her country needs deeper economic and security ties with Europe and parts of Asia due to the geopolitical shift unfolding under President Trump.
We have not necessarily had the reflex to diversify trade, and weve been overreliant on the U.S., Joly said Friday at a business event in Vancouver, British Columbia. We need new alliances and new partnerships. We need to diversify, not only the trade side, but also on the security front.
Trump said this week he is on course to place tariffs of up to 25% on imports from Canada starting March 4. Nearly 20% of Canadas gross domestic product is tied to exports to the U.S. Officials from the Bank of Canada, the central bank, have warned that a prolonged trade conflict between Ottawa and Washington would have severe repercussions for the economy.
When they negotiate with us, they dont only talk about trade, they actually talk about a series of different topics, Joly said of talks to avert tariffs on the countrys U.S.-bound exports. She added Canadian officials have repeatedly warned U.S. officials and lawmakers that hefty tariffs on Canadian imports will result in higher prices for U.S. consumers and potential job losses, given the integration between the two economies.
