The Trump administration has fired hundreds of workers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), the USs pre-eminent climate research agency housed within the Department of Commerce, the Guardian has learned. On Thursday afternoon, the commerce department sent emails to employees saying their jobs would be cut off at the end of the day, in a move that one worker called wrong all around.
Other government agencies have also seen massive staffing cuts in recent days. The firings specifically affected probationary employees, a categorization that applies to new hires or those moved or promoted into new positions, and which makes up roughly 10% of the agencys workforce.
The majority of probationary employees in my office have been with the agency for 10+ years and just got new positions, said one worker who still had their job, and who spoke to the Guardian under the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. If we lose them, were losing not just the world-class work they do day to day but also decades of expertise and institutional knowledge. Another anonymous staffer called the laid-off workers dedicated, hard-working civil servants who came to Noaa to help protect lives and keep our blue planet healthy.
These indiscriminate cuts are cruel and thoughtless, the second worker said. It is not only laid-off employees who will be harmed by the cuts, the second worker said. Ordinary Americans who rely on Noaas extreme weather forecasts, climate data and sustainably-monitored fisheries will also suffer. Words cant describe the impact this will have, both on us at Noaa and on the country, the employee said. Its just wrong all around.

(5,373 posts)musk/trump has done to kill our democracy and force our government down the trash barrels. Although I'm going to be participating tomorrow, I don't see how a one day boycott... a no-buy anything- day... can make any kind of impression on anyone. While I didn't like the sound of it, I'm warming up to the one-week buy-nothing boycott that's been bandied about. It would be hard where grocery and cat food is concerned. I don't like stocking meat in my freezer because 1) I can't afford more than a single meat item or two 2) I have a small refrig with an even smaller freezer in the top. The one thing I am going to start doing is looking for vegetarian high-protein meals to experiment with. BUT I am expecting trump/musks tariffs on Mexico (especially) and Canada to contribute to rising prices on fruits and vegetables.
Damn... it's this entire administration that is sick, sick, sick!

(96,391 posts)The deep south is about to have a tornado filled couple days next week so that will be a point of issue along with no FEMA to help afterward.

Articles and discussions need to focus not just on process but on the damage being done which will long outlive the sick f*cks who are causing this. And that includes the enabling gop elected officials who express 'concern' but do nothing to stop it. In fact they are the only ones who can stop it.
