Fort Deposit sets January election date

On Tuesday, citizens attended the first of two special-called meetings of the Fort Deposit Town Council. Scheduled to handle the business necessary to hold special elections for two town offices, the meeting became tense as Fort Deposit leaders navigated the concerns expressed by local citizens.

Four of the council’s five members were present — Yvonne Jones, Randy Adams, William Steiner and Darrell Heartsill — alongside Fort Deposit Mayor Jacqulyn Boone. Willa Gail Savage was not present for the meeting.

The council unanimously approved setting a special election for the town’s mayor and District 2 offices on Jan. 13, 2026 and now look to the Alabama League of Municipalities to set an election calendar for the deadlines leading up to January voting.

“Michael at the League stated that everyone [who is] in place has to stay in place until after the special election,” Boone said. “He will make sure that the calendar is done.”
