Occam's Razor
Magats who are in control of blue districts try to create long voting lines, or by creating chaos at blue voting sites, calling in bomb threats at blue voting sites etc. People who have to wait 3,4,5,6 hours to vote, if they use their heads, will do mail in ballots the next time to avoid the long lines.
It could really be bad in states, like my state of Pa. that doesn't have early voting times, force voters to show up at the polls and then disrupt the vote at those polling places.

The majority (about 65% IIRC) of voters over 60 vote for Republicans most of the time.
They are also the largest portion of mail in ballot users.
And, they far and away have the highest turnout of any age group,

According to PEW in 2024 - 44% 0f Democrats used mail in ballots, while 26% of Republicans used mail in ballots.
Maybe PEW is wrong?

My point is, banning mail in ballots would have an impact on a population that the majority of which has predictably voted for republicans in the last several cycles, and the Republicans know this, which is why many oppose the SAVE act.
Trump thinks banning mail in ballots would make the midterms a slam dunk for Republicans, but that is far from certain.
I think its highly unlikely Trump will succeed in stopping mail in voting.
As Thomas Massie said yesterday if elections are so corrupt, why do republicans keep winning?

(69,972 posts)Also, voter suppression tactics tend to affect traditionally Democratic voters more.
Overly simplified, the reasoning is that Republican voters tend to be wealthier. They tend to have jobs that allow time off to vote without penalty, or they are retired or stay at home wives who can easily find time to go to the polls.
In contrast, overly simplified, many Democrats work jobs that require time cards or specific shifts that don't allow flexibility for time off to vote. Disabled people find it difficult to vote in person. Rural people may have to drive long distances to the polls. Poorer people often don't have access to transportation. They may be caring for older people or children at home and be unable to go to the polls. Health care providers may work long shifts on Election Day that make it impossible for them to get to the polls to vote in person.
Republican tricks like closing polling places, limiting voting hours, and stocking polling sites in Democratic precincts with too few machines limit access further.
Voting by mail is a simple solution that equalizes access to voting. That's why it's being demonized and destroyed by the Republicans.
