Earworm Kars4Kids jingle yanked from California airwaves for false advertising

The twangy jingle produced by Kars4Kids will no longer be broadcast in California, at least in its current form, after a state judge determined last week the charity’s ads amounted to false advertising.

The infamously catchy tune – “1-877-Kars4Kids/K-A-R-S Kars for Kids/1-877-Kars4Kids/Donate your car today” – has been on airwaves for nearly two decades. During that time, Kars4Kids has faced litigation and state government investigations for its misleading fundraising practices.

Bruce Puterbaugh brought suit against the charity in 2021, after he parted ways with a nonfunctional 2001 Volvo XC valued at $250.

He donated to the charity, believing it worked in service of “underprivileged kids from all over the US”, according to documents from the Orange county superior court.

Puterbaugh would later learn Kars4Kids is used to fund Oorah, a Jewish non-profit. That organization runs summer camps in the tri-state area and organizes gap year trips to Israel for 17- and 18-year-olds. Oorah also used $16.5m funneled from Kars4Kids to buy a building in Israel as it expands its presence there.

Found out about the controversy, and decided to donate to Habitat for Humanity instead. They were great to deal with.

And they will still be able to advertise in CA, if their ads honestly state to who/where the money goes.

K4K worked with Steve Terreberry to record a new version with kids actually playing the instruments in a School Of Rock fashion.
I don't know when it will start being used, but the audio & video are already done.

The two places post on the internet are DU and a chat forum for the SF Giants, been both places for years.

At the baseball forum we "chat" while listening to games on radio or TV. Kars4Kids has been a common ad on the radio broadcasts and a running joke as far as obnoxiousness.

Who would have ever guessed the Israel connection?

They are being told they cannot misrepresent what the charity does.

But this is actual misrepresentation. They advertised it was to help underprivileged youth all over the country. That is not what they are doing. They are a defacto religious organization, giving religious assistance only to one specific religion.

Nothing wrong with that but why were they hiding that fact, Literally for decades? People were giving to a charity in which they thought they were doing one thing but it was actually doing something very different.

12. not to be confused with Cars for Kids

but i'm thinking it might be confused with it

google overview:

Kars4Kids and Cars for Kids are two entirely separate, competing charities that have engaged in significant legal battles over their similar names. While both accept vehicle donations to fund youth programs, Kars4Kids (with a K) is a national Jewish organization known for its jingle, while Cars for Kids (with a C) is a Texas-based charity.Kars4Kids (Kars4Kids.org)

Focus:
Funds Oorah, a Jewish outreach organization that provides educational and enrichment programs for Jewish children and families.

Profile: High-volume, national charity with a well-known jingle.

Issues: Has faced scrutiny over high fundraising/advertising costs, with a significant portion of donations going to administrative and marketing overhead.

Cars for Kids (CarsforKids.org)
Focus: A Texas-based charity (founded by America Can!) that supports educational opportunities for at-risk youth, particularly high school dropouts aiming to get their GED.

Profile: A smaller, primarily Texas-based organization that often faces confusion with the larger "Kars4Kids" entity.

Status: Won a 2019 legal ruling against Kars4Kids for trademark infringement, with a judge ordering the latter to pay damages, though appeals followed.

Key Differences at a Glance

Mission: Kars4Kids supports Orthodox Jewish education; Cars for Kids supports at-risk youth education.

Origin: Kars4Kids started in 1995 (NJ); Cars for Kids started in the late 1980s (Texas).

Reputation: Kars4Kids is known for its intense advertising; Cars for Kids often claims to be the original, smaller charity hindered by the other's marketing.

I can count on one hand all the times I've heard that song.

Mind if I turn on the radio?

Please don't.

If I visit an internet site frequently I pay to make the ads go away. If that's not an option I generally don't go there. The television in our house plays DVDs and no-advertising streaming services. That's all it does.

I hope to make any data aggregators are collecting about me less valuable.
