Yeah yeah I know, our strongest/sole Mideast ally, blah blah blah, I no longer care. Their atrocities just continue to mount and the warhawks love them while sane people detest their warmongering, genocidal atrocities. I am tired of decades of OUR money supporting them and so now, go ahead and flame away if you must... I don't care.
Brief rant over.

(182 posts)But Hollywood sure does.
I just watched the new movie "Nuremberg" only to be reminded over and over again about 6 million Holocaust deaths.
That was certainly a horrible, factual atrocity.
But so were the deaths of 60 million other people in WW2. The fire bombing of Dresden, the vaporizing of tens of thousands of civilians at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Nazi brutalizing of Soviet soldiers and citizens were also "crimes against humanity."
Hey, Israel: We ALL have been victims.
Just ask the Cherokee. Or the Ukrainians who died in Stalin's Holodomor.
Or the Catholics burned at the stake by Protestants and vice versa.
And the victims of brutal American slavery in the so-called "Land of the Free"!

(38,517 posts)The ONLY nukes dropped on humans were by the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The largest estimates I can find for the death toll of those two bombs - including those who died later from the after-effects of radiation exposure - is around 250,000 total. 1/24th of the death toll of Jews at the hand of Nazis.
Objectively, the holocaust was worse.
But don't kid yourself. The world knew what was going on in the Holocaust - for the most part, people just turned a blind eye as long as they were not the targets. People turned a blind eye to the Holocaust, just as many in the US are turning a blind eye to the atrocities committed by and on behalf of Trump.

(5,046 posts)We and many I know boycott any brand or investment that could benefit Israel. If you look at foreign investment in Israel and now, since Trump 2.0, the US it has been markedly in decline. The economic story is one side of the coin but the other is international politics and cooperation which is also no longer favoring either country. While Trump can threaten foreign governments, individuals and businesses in those countries still get to do what they want. Like no longer buy our wine, spirits, cars, military hardware, professional services, stocks, bonds, ag products and on and on. Plus, the Iranians as a Muslim based culture are not going away. Nor are the Palestinians. Do the current actions decrease the risks to Israel and the US? Only in the short term but at great cost to our image and pocketbooks.

Only we can do that by voting, making noise daily, and forming tight alliances with those that agree with us. Its fantastic that most Israelis are our allies, dont you think? Please be very specific when you rant? It can be a good thing, but non-specificity can get a lot of people hurt.

(4,187 posts)And Trump is of course beholden to his evangelical base. As well as his fanatically pro-Israel Zionist (is that redundant?) donors. Like Miriam Adelson, who donated $100 million to his campaign and who was standing right behind him at his first inauguration. Not sure where she was at the second one, but not far behind I'm sure. It is thanks to the influence and pressure of the Adelson family that the embassy was moved to Jerusalem and Golan Heights was annexed. Adelson and others are now pushing for West Bank annexation.
My viw of evangelicals? They should all move to Israel and wait for the end times there. I'm sure they would enjoy both the wait and the event.

(54,759 posts)that "It's the only democracy in the Mid-East."
Well, it's not a democracy. Israel doesn't recognize Arabs as citizens. Israel purposely displaces Arabs for Jewish settlers. Arabs have a very limited role in government. Israel is essentially a theocracy as fundamentalist Jews have a strong coalition in the government and Netanyahu supports them.
You know which country HAD a democracy? Iran. Until 1952, when it nationalized the oil reserves, and the CIA replaced Iran's democracy with a monarch.
AloeVera
(4,187 posts)Just because someone will chime in with a half-truth..
About citizenship, the Arab population of Israel proper does have citizenship. They call themseles Palestinian Citizens of Israel.
But the catch is they don't have EQUAL citizenship to Jewish Israelis who are the only ones granted the right to self-determination.
The 1992 Basic Law of Human Dignity and Freedom (like a Bill of Rights) establishes Israel as a state of the "Jewish people". Not its citizens. So where do Palestinians fit in to a bill that touts HUMAN freedom and dignity? Where is THEIR state?
In addition, dozens of laws priviledge Jewish Israelis over Palestinians, who also get inferior state services. Palestinian kids do poorly in school because they receive vastly inferior education. (Compare that to Gaza, where literacy and post-secondary completion rates are sky high). There are as many as 45 pre-Israel, old Palestinian villages that receive no state services like water and electricity at all. The list of inequalities goes on and on.
To top it all off, most Israelis want their Palestinian "citizens " to skedaddle and be gone from the "state of the Jewish people". At some point, that is what will happen, "citizenship" or not.

(4,187 posts)I ike the idea of sharing. As in a One State. But it's a pipedream now...
Interestingly, I read somewhere there is increased support among Palestinians for a One State. If that is true, they are becoming more pragmatic and willing to share while Israeli Jews are undeniably moving towards extremism, intransigence and winner-take-all.

(806 posts)I cannot express how angry it makes me that the sole Jewish state on the planet is led by absolute monsters.
Seeing Jewish symbols used in the oppression of Palestinians has been deeply disturbing to me. The first moment that shook me was noticing the Temple Menorah carved into the stone wall of a police station where my Palestinian friends had been physically abused. It felt jarring and painful to see a symbol with such deep spiritual meaning associated with a place of violence. I struggled deeply with the knowledge that children in Gaza were drawing pictures of Israeli fighter jets marked with the Magen David on their wings. The way these images became tied to their experience of fear and war filled me with anger and heartbreak. And the genocide has torn my soul.
Likud is now in the center. The extreme right has moved to the mainstream . And that is what Amalek actually looks like.
