(26,012 posts)Yeah, we know Iran's leaders suck. But they've been mostly contained for years. Now we're looking at 100 to 120$ oil on Monday and a global recession.
What are we winning here?
Justice matters.

(13,342 posts)The catholic religion is the same way.
Lunatics using terrorism and a specific terroristic threat to force children to believe in the catholic god. Not free will, but the threat of burning in the flames of hell for eternity if you die with a mortal sin on your soul. In other words, you can burn in the flames of hell for missing something as little as missing going to mass on Sunday.
That some lunatic shit experienced first hand.

(580 posts)Has no dominion over you. No children are "force[d]" to "believe in the catholic [sic] god [sic]," even if they are enrolled in parochial school, for their minds are yet free to disbelieve.
For that matter, the concept of "Hell" is not confined to the Catholic branch of Christianity.

(13,342 posts)it was exactly as described. Forced acceptance of the one and only...blah blah blah
As a believer it was terrifying, but fortunately none of it that matters anymore. As an evolutionary biologist all that imaginary sky people fantasy was put to rest many decades ago.

(1,168 posts)I went through hell (no pun intended) for turning my back on the Catholic Church when I was in 7th grade in Catholic school after the lay teacher screamed at me in front of the class to never think for myself. My transgression that caused his outburst? I asked this in science class: if glass is transparent, why can we still see it? I wasnt trying to be a smart alec or trip him up, it was a genuine question. He could have answered we can see glass because of impurities in the manufacturing process or because of light conditions, but instead chose to berate me in front of everyone, making an example of me so that other kids would not question anything. I was screamed at to never think for myself and to just believe in what I was told. From that moment on I was done with the Catholic Church. But I was a kid and still had to go to church on Sundays and that wretched school, where I was mostly shunned by the other kids and that same teacher was openly hostile to me and continued to berate me from that day forward throughout the year. The last day of the school year I went home and burned my school uniform. I think I was grounded the entire summer vacation for that stunt but maintained my refusal to go back. Eventually my mom relented and enrolled me in public school for 8th grade. I think that decision became mostly a financial one for her since our family had fallen on hard times and she wouldnt have to pay tuition any more. Anyway, its not easy going against the grain at that age. Kids are brainwashed from 1st grade on to unquestionably believe all the dogma. And they make an example of one kid like me to reinforce obedience in the other kids. They lost me, but the 30 other kids in my class toed the line after that.

Don't fall for this bs and avoid getting into a debate about how bad the people running the country are.
We know they are horrible.
We also know what happened with Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.

(1,448 posts)And actions take away from the credibility. The question is whether or to what level its worth it that they dont acquire nuclear weapons. Its near impossible to stop at that point ( n Korea or maybe Russia).
In the world, at least it doesnt seem like next level craziness occurs, which would be China or Russia just giving Iran or others nuclear weapons. Maybe this is the bridge too far.
