Maryland man released after federal judge rules Trump administration detained him unconstitutionally.
WASHINGTON At 3 a.m. Friday, Carlos Ventura Martinez stepped off a plane at Reagan National Airport and into the arms of his wife after spending more than four months in an ICE detention center in Louisiana.
"It's over," Martinez told his wife, Luz, in Spanish. "Everything is all right."
Martinez's release came after a federal judge ruled this week that his detention was unconstitutional a decision his attorneys say could have broader implications for President Donald Trump's enhanced immigration enforcement policies.
"Incarcerating immigrants as punishment has always been unconstitutional," said Mark Shmueli, Martinez's Maryland attorney, who greeted him at the airport Friday morning. "And this is part of an effort of the administration to disregard the laws and disregard any due process.".>>>
