Trump to quadruple Argentine beef imports while US ranchers fume

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is quadrupling the country's low-tariff imports of Argentine beef in his attempt to lower grocery store beef prices, a White House official said on Thursday, evoking fury from the nation's cattle ranchers.

Raising the tariff rate quota on Argentine beef to 80,000 metric tons will let the country ship more of its beef to the U.S. at a lower rate of duty. U.S. beef prices have set records due to tight cattle supplies and strong consumer demand.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday announced a plan to expand the domestic cattle herd and support American cattle ranchers. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria" said the administration was working to support both beef consumers and ranchers.

But hiking imports has angered U.S. ranchers, who largely supported Trump in his campaigns for president. They said the government should back U.S. producers and that increased imports threaten their livelihoods.

Per other reports, Krasnov says ranchers should be grateful for his tariffs, and they should also lower beef prices.

Knowing Trump‘s affinity for „deals,“ I‘d suspect that China‘s arrangement to buy all its soybeans from Argentina instead of the USA included substantial commissions paid into some account controlled by Trump. That‘s the only reason I can think of that neither Trump nor his Secretaries of Commerce and Agriculture are screaming with rage.

Because of severe cholesterol issues, I have barely touched beef for over 20 years. However, friends not similarly afflicted, and who are familiar with beef from both countries, say Argentine beef tastes better. They presume less hormones and other additives, but with no definite knowledge one way or the other. Whichever the case, American farmers had plenty of time and availability of information to make an informed decision last election. Now they come crying, but given the chance to do their vote over again, I‘m positive well over half of them would wave their bibles and vote the same way again. So let them hope that Jesus saves. I can‘t, and Trump won‘t.

restaurants rather than supermarkets. The wannabe king is catering to his 1% posse. The ranchers and farmers who voted for Trump - and it seems there are many - should wake up and realize they and the other MAGA dupes are expendable. Trump is in it for Trump.
