Trump says he’s ending trade talks with Canada over TV ads

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said late Thursday that he was ending “all trade negotiations” with Canada because of a television ad opposing U.S. tariffs that he said misstated the facts and called “egregious behavior” aimed at influencing U.S. court decisions.

The post on Trump’s social media site came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he aims to double his country’s exports to countries outside the U.S. because of the threat posed by Trump’s tariffs. Trump’s call for an abrupt end to negotiations could further inflame trade tensions that already have been building between the two neighboring countries for months.

Trump posted, “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.”

“The ad was for $75,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts,” Trump wrote on his social media site. “TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

An estimated 15.03 million people watched Game 7 of the Blue Jays-Mariners series across the U.S. and Canada, with an average of 9.03 million viewers in the U.S. and 6 million in Canada. The game was the most-watched ALCS game in the U.S. since 2017 and the most-watched Blue Jays game ever in Canada.

I sure hope it airs again and again during the World Series!

It's hilarious that 47 is upset about "inaccuracies." What is inaccurate? It's not like they used AI to fake Reagan's voice. He said what he said. And they are playing it. People are free to judge the merit, just as they are free to judge the merit of any speech.

Reagan:
TRANSCRIPT
April 25 1987

At first, when someone says, “Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,” it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works — but only for a short time. What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.

There's a youtube video linked at this site.

Reagan did impose tariffs on Japan having to do with semiconductors, which he probably had no idea what they are.

And here is the entire speech for context.

In particular, it is interesting to hear Reagan attack the Smoot-Hawly Tariffs. For all the phony outrage from the Reagan Foundation and Trump. - it is not fake, and in the full context, it is clear Reagan would have hated Trump's trade policies.

I don't really care he did that but I thought it was a useless exercise and the money would have been better spent talking to Canadians to continue their boycott and why it is important. Not going to change Maga minds.

it reveals how he thinks they can disregard law and the Constitution in order to placate HIM.

Very telling.

Between employment loses, housing costs, and inflation, he needs to stop trying to tickle Trump and really be playing defense. The reality of the economy is that Canada is not positioned well without the US and it’s the Canadian people who are suffering.
