The East Wing Obscenity

When fired up, Rick Wilson can write with bravado and beauty. His most recent essay on Donald Trump's assault on America is laced with both. When I received this in my morning mail, I was struck all over again by the sickening visuals we saw yesterday, the wanton destruction by a small, greedy man who brazenly told the press he loved the sound of demolition because it sounded like money.

A few excerpts below but I would recommend reading the full text. It will make you angry but it will also inspire all of us to keep the pressure on, to recognize the full depths of Trump's depravity, his willful ignorance of what America, despite all her flaws, means to her citizens and the world beyond.

Opening paragraphs:

There’s a way the light falls in the White House on Autumn afternoons in Washington, thinning with the waning of the year, slanting, a dull gold the color of old parchment, that makes you feel you’ve slipped into a country where history isn’t past tense but a persistent whisper.

In the sad obscenity of the moment, one of the White House’s most beautiful spaces has been amputated, torn away from time and memory in an act of vulgar insult. The East Wing is lost now.

And,

Jacqueline Kennedy took the White House and made it an American cultural project without turning it into a museum. Her work wasn’t just about tables and fabrics; it was about the idea that the place mattered, that a nation with the existential threat of the bomb and a tide of trouble on the horizon also deserved elegance and art. Lady Bird Johnson gave us wildflowers and the conviction that beauty is public policy, too. Pat Nixon added to the collection with a practical eye, because good stewardship is rarely fashionable but always necessary. Rosalynn Carter welded compassion to competence.

Nancy Reagan wrapped it all in some theater, yes, but with a director’s sharp instinct for scene and consequence. Barbara Bush, in those kinder, gentler moments, welcomed those points of light to the East Wing. Hillary Clinton put a policy-nerd backbone into it; Laura Bush, a librarian’s quiet welcome to young readers. Michelle Obama threw the doors wide, cultivating White House gardens and kids’ health programs.

And,

The desecration is not a broken façade. It’s a broken covenant.

This is not about the wall being savaged by demolition machines.

It’s about what the East Wing is supposed to accomplish in the American psyche. The West Wing, prior to this fallen era, was where decisions were forged under terrible pressure, the grim and necessary mechanics of governance. The East Wing is where the republic breathes out, where we make meaning beyond politics, show mercy, and demonstrate that democracy can have manners.

It’s the wing that says, “We remember you,” to the bereaved and “We see you,” to the overlooked. It was, in a functional theology of civic life, the chapel. We do not need our leaders to be saints, but we are right to insist they treat the people’s house with respect.

I think it's a really good piece of writing that thumps with anger and passion. It certainly reminds us of the utterly small, greedy, vulgar man squatting in the White House and those who continue to excuse the inexcusable, even when it involves the desecration of the People's House. But then Agent Orange didn't much care on J6 when our Capitol Building was overrun, smeared with feces and urine.

A day of reckoning is coming.

this. Pulled me in with those opening
words about the changing, golden Autumn light. Of all the wretched things Trump has done, his fiendish and very public glee at the utter destruction of this sacred space is some of the most abhorrent.

The act itself, the demolition will live in our memories as we ponder what "rough beast
slouches towards Bethlehem".
What else lies ahead if he is not stopped?

Thank you, peggysue2

Nice to see you, Sister. Take care.

Btw, the candle image is well-chosen. Every day feels like a funeral which was one of the reasons the No Kings March this past Saturday was such a boost. For me, certainly. Great weather, lots of positive energy and I spent the day with my oldest son. Good times!

Managed by the National Park Service (NPS): The White House is located in President's Park, an 82-acre national park. Congress assigned the building to the NPS in 1961, which holds the property in trust for all Americans. The NPS is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds.

The White House is paid for by taxpayers: The American public funds the White House and its maintenance through taxes, reinforcing the idea of public ownership.

Presidents are temporary tenants: The President and their family do not own the White House but occupy it as a job benefit. They are not permitted to make major structural changes without approval, and the property's assets belong to the nation.

The term "the People's House" emphasizes that the building belongs to the citizens of the United States. It is a symbol of American democracy.

What the felon has done is signal his theft of the White House from the American people.

Why? Just why? It is the people's house and is managed by the National Park Service, so why can't we do something about this? How can we stop it? I can't even come up with any ideas. Lawsuits take forever and the SCOTUS is completely compromised when it comes to whatever IT does. The protests were huge but it still doesn't stop him.

I'm floundering here trying to figure out what we can do to stop this, right fucking now!

Trump's whole tenure is a major crime scene.

You take the East Wing outrage, his vulgar cartoon shitting on the American public, and now demanding the DOJ hand over $230 million from OUR TREASURY for what he calls compensation.

For being criminally investigated and attempting to hold this gangster accountable.

That's just in the last 5 days.

Tony Soprano would be jealous.

Before destroying it he stole artifacts and art from it. Were those things inventoried and stored at the National Archives?

We need to find out.

He's not planning on leaving. I saw a quote once, can't lay my fingers on it at the moment, where he said the White House was not to his taste, and he basically hated it. Melania hates it. I can see him tearing the whole structure down to put up a tacky golden castle. With a golf course.

legal expenses, $340 ? Million.

Let's start deducting the the cost of Jan 6, invasion of our cities, destruction of our public property, twice for the Rose Garden and for the East Wing, above and below ground. Then there are all the extra expenses of flying him home to play golf every weekend. The extra security for his absent wife. The extra charges for SS detail for rooms at his resort.
Don't even touch the Qatar Jet. What a waste of time effort and money.

Add to the list.

With this. He doesn't own the White House, how can one demented obscenity do this? And he stated last year that the "ballroom" wouldn't touch the white house. He should be thrown into prison for this.
