But the multi-talented athlete was excluded from high school basketball tryouts last Tuesday because of a clerical error on his original birth certificate. His mother, Becky Jackson, says there was a mix-up at the hospital the day he was born.
I give them the birth certificate, and theyre like, Did you know this says female? Jackson said. I was like, Oh, man, thats so funny. So, we come home. Everyones laughing.
Over the years, the fact that Lakers birth certificate mistakenly listed him as female hasnt caused many issues until he decided to try out for the boys basketball team.
The family got a corrected birth certificate, but the school district says that's not enough and is threatening chromosomal testing.

(10,009 posts)dont do they. The school district demanding testing to see if he is male or female, ridiculous.

(150,016 posts)Either that or let him join the girls' team and shower with them. They'll figure it out just fine.
Ridiculous. Of course birth certificates have mistakes on them. Humans make them.

(14,768 posts)Honestly, I'm surprised the school hasn't forced to make him participate in Girl's PE classes once Trans Panic started taking over Red states a couple years ago.
Arizona did just recently become a Blue state, after all - and the kid started Middle School 2 years ago. They would have checked his Birth Certificate last year at least.

(17,119 posts)have to show it for some reason to join school teams to prove you are male or female, which is ridiculous.

He wasnt that tall but he was strong and hit a lot of home runs so they questioned his age a lot

that was a particularly big deal for the nasty-minded.
We have always had a slew of those in this country.
glad that shit was over before my first child was born in 1975.

(99,933 posts)In 1959 when I was 12 a young pregnant woman was staying with a neighbor family before giving birth and going back where she came from. I honestly dont know much of the story except this:
She was visiting our state, and not planning to stay forever
She fell in love with a young Marine who was stationed there
She got pregnant and he disappeared from her life
She went to see his Commanding Officer, who had the unpleasant task of informing her that there wasnt going to be any wedding because she was the fifth girl to show up in this condition
So being pregnant in 1959 and having no other choice except giving away her firstborn, she came up with a story to tell the folks back home when she showed up with a baby: We fell deeply in love, we got secretly married, and he tragically died.
But, when she got the birth cert, it was stamped ILLEGITIMATE.
My mother was absolutely incensed at the injustice and cruelty, which is when I got told all this. Mom told me that would follow the kid all his days, because there were so many things his mom would have to produce it for, like starting kindergarten, and high school, getting a drivers license, and getting drafted.
Ah, the good old days, when a woman and her offspring would be punished for life for her having unauthorized sex.
My first was born in 1975, as was yours. I was 21 when I got the Pill when it was available and legal for me, an unmarried college student getting engaged. I kid you not, stories like that one from 1959 were why I was such a good girl in my youth.
