Something else about the criminal destruction of the East Wing

This from a post on another website discussion.

What's really crazy here is how unprofessional this demo looks. I've worked in construction before, and unless it's a completely derelict building you don't simply knock it down like they're doing, you'd remove things like windows and doors by hand and the rooms would certainly be empty of things like carpeting, light fixtures and window treatments...and yet here this company is just knocking the East Wing down without any apparent prework.

Again, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the quality of work being done given who ordered it as I can't imagine any legitimately skilled contractors with experience working on historical buildings would likely say yes to the project given that it completely skipped the usual vetting and approval process. So we're getting shoddy work because Trump had to go with someone wholly inexperienced because they were the only company that said yes.

First action from the next Dem President is to tear this monstrosity down.

who care, and you can feel the sadness of those of us who care. Like someone posted today here in DU, I think he/she is right saying that the goal is to destroy and put money in his pocket, he doesn't care about doing anything good, he has no respect for history, or for the country, and those of us who do are sad and angry.

Why is it the Democrats cannot do anything about it? If it was the other way around I know republicans would be moving lawyers, and whatever else was at their disposal to stop it.

This is so weird what is happening, how can a convicted felon have so much power to destroy and no one tries to stop him? There have to be legal ways of stopping him, and I understand some people will say "he doesn't respect the law", THEN MAKE HIM RESPECT THE LAW!

including smashing artistically significant Art Deco friezes, when he was clearing the space to build Trump Tower.

https://placesjournal.org/article/post-trump/

"In
1980 I was a working for an architectural firm in Midtown Manhattan. I enjoyed going out at lunchtime to visit art galleries, which in those days were clustered around 57th Street; and which is how, on a sunny day in June, I found myself on the eleventh floor of a building on Fifth Avenue, in the Robert Miller Gallery. I don’t recall the art being shown that day, but I do have an indelible memory of what I saw from the gallery’s big windows. Directly across stood the department store Bonwit Teller, the elegant facade of which featured a spectacular 15-foot-high Art Deco sculptural ensemble, at eye level with the gallery. That day activity across the avenue was unusual, and it took me a moment to realize that workmen on a scaffold were in the process of destroying the limestone bas-reliefs with masonry saws and jackhammers. Other gallerygoers took notice, and we all watched the demolition in horror — and then somebody muttered “that fucking bastard!”

“That fucking bastard” was — who else? — Donald Trump. Known back then as the brash and ambitious scion of a real estate family from Queens, Trump had not yet fully impressed himself onto the consciousness of New York City, but he was well on his way — and the controversy surrounding the destroyed sculptures definitely put his name in the news. The young Trump had acquired the site at 56th and Fifth in 1979, after Bonwit Teller relocated to a smaller site a block north, and he announced big plans to demolish the 1929 structure and erect a $100‑million tower with a mix of commercial and residential space. The old Bonwit’s, designed by Warren and Wetmore, the architects of Grand Central Terminal, was not a designated landmark, but the sculpture had become a beloved local icon. With demolition imminent, public concerns were allayed when the developer agreed to preserve the artwork and donate it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which estimated its value at $200,000. Hence the shock when, on June 6, 1980, the front page of the New York Times ran this headline: “Developer Scraps Bonwit Sculptures.” A Trump Organization spokesman told the Times reporter that independent art appraisers (never identified) had declared that the decorative panels were of little value, and certainly not enough to justify the estimated $32,000 cost of their removal or the ten-day delay to the project. 3 When reminded in a later interview of the Met’s appraisal, Trump claimed that removal of the sculpture would actually have cost $500,000 and caused months of delay. Soon Trump was referring dismissively to “the junk I destroyed at Bonwit Teller” and boasting that he’d ordered the destruction himself. "....(more)

[Note: In other accounts I have read, the Trump "spokesman" who belittled the value of the sculptures was revealed to have been none other than "John Barron."]

Usually, even if something completely new is going to be constructed on the site, the first act of demolition is salvage. It can reduce the costs of the project significantly by reusing fixtures and other materials.

In this case the First Toddler and his yet to be determined self-dealing wrecking crew are knocking down a cherished American temple of democracy like an old garden shed. But, what do we expect after witnessing his using a national cemetery as a photo op backdrop and smearing feces in the Capitol.

It only highlights the contempt Tantrum Tito has for the office he holds and the people he claims to represent.

From the images I've seen it looks like they simply brought in a big backhoe in to tear down an entire section of the existing East Wing. Demolition involving an important historical building, either to renovate or for an addition, begins with a thorough survey to identify potential hazards to the existing structure during the proces. Architects will make a detailed plan for the deconstruction to preserve historical elements, protect salvageable materials during the dismantling, and erect structural shoring to protect the integrity of the structure during renovation. Apparently, none of this was done.

If he did this properly, it would go out for competitive bids, Congress would appropriate funds, there would be building permits and historic preservation plans, and a contractor would carefully do the job.

His motto must have been “better to ask forgiveness than permission”, because he was constantly being fined for the wretched crap he pulled. One time, he sent bulldozers *in the middle of the night* to plow over a pond where he knew endangered, protected frogs lived. The profit he made on the housing subdivisions more than paid for the paltry fine he was assessed.

This whole operation smacks of this mindset. Rump HAD to know how much people would object to/hate what he planned to do to the East Wing. So he had to move quickly before a response could be mustered (lawsuits, cease and desist, demand for Congressional review and approval, etc.). It’s shoddy work because he ordered them to tear it down before anyone had a chance to stop him. The construction company may very well be bottom-of-the-barrel, but the reckless “just try and stop me” speed was ordered from the top.

"No Kings" enraged him so he had to erupt some other way? BIG TIME! Called the wrecking crew and told them to DO IT NOW! Two days later was the soonest they could start. It was all about his fury and sending a message.

He's basically a wild animal that kills other "animals" and destroys things because it makes him feel dominant. Like an animal, he urinates builds things to serve as "territorial markers." He presumes the ballroom will always be called the "Trump Ballroom" so he'll be remembered in discussions about the White House...FOREVER.

54. MaddowBlog-It's not just the facade: Team Trump has wrecked much of the White House's East Wing

By Tuesday afternoon, it appeared obvious that a significant portion of the East Wing has been demolished, the president's earlier vows notwithstanding.

As the controversy surrounding the demolition project was growing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that she believed the outrage to be “fake,” because nearly every president has made “modernizations and renovations” during his tenure. But we’re not just talking about modest alterations. Rather, in this instance, we’re talking about bulldozers.

While the news on Monday afternoon indicated that crews had torn down the entrance way to the White House’s East Wing, it became clear a day later that the facade wasn’t the only part of the structure affected. The Washington Post reported:

A demolition job that began Monday with the disappearance of the White House’s eastern entrance advanced Tuesday with the destruction of much of the East Wing, according to a photograph obtained by The Washington Post and two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the scene.

By Tuesday afternoon, it appeared obvious that a significant portion of the East Wing has been demolished, Trump’s earlier vows notwithstanding.

NEW: After The Washington Post reported Monday on the demolition of the "East Wing facade," a new picture obtained by Law Dork that was taken on Tuesday shows that a substantial portion of the entirety of the East Wing has been demolished.

.....Of course, those aren’t just partisan complaints: Trump, acting at his own discretion, really is treating the White House as if it were his own personal property.

As we’ve discussed, the symbolic significance is impossible to miss: An authoritarian president is literally tearing down part of a national treasure because he wants a fancy ballroom to host parties for the elite.

The White House has reportedly asked that officials “refrain from taking and sharing photographs of the grounds, to include the East Wing, without prior approval from the Office of Public Affairs.” This probably won’t stop images from reaching the public, though the appeal suggests that Team Trump isn’t exactly proud of its handiwork.

Surprise me if he replaces almost the entire house by the end of his term. He had talked before about it being a dump.

A historic structure has all sorts of now rare materials, trim and finishes. They are going about this in the worst possible way.

Anymore the state of the art for this is careful disassembly where every nail is salvaged.

Post WW2 had lots of asbestos in the late 40s through the early 1950s. One can assume it had asbestos unless confirmed absent.

One does not just knock down a viable building. One salvages materials first.

This action of just destroying the building was nothing but a trump tantrum. These tantrums are getting worse and more seriously dangerous every week. He is insane and dangerous. Your or I would have been put into a locked mental care facility long ago for half the stuff he has pulled.

The writer questioned the basic safety of this demolition, specifically asbestos which was used liberally until deadly health issues were recognized and massive asbestos removal went into gear.

Was there ever any asbestos remediation done on the East Wing prior to this week’s rip out?

If not, Trump may have just created a massive toxic dump site.
