Anti-science bills hit statehouses, stripping away public health protections built over a century
By MICHELLE R. SMITH and LAURA UNGAR
Updated 9:36 AM CDT, October 21, 2025

More than 420 anti-science bills attacking longstanding public health protections – vaccines, milk safety and fluoride – have been introduced in statehouses across the U.S. this year, part of an organized, politically savvy campaign to enshrine a conspiracy theory-driven agenda into law.

An Associated Press investigation found that the wave of legislation has cropped up in most states, pushed by people with close ties to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The effort would strip away protections that have been built over a century and are integral to American lives and society. Around 30 bills have been enacted or adopted in 12 states.

Trump administration officials are directing activists to push anti-science legislation in the states – where public health authority rests – with the ultimate goal of changing laws and minds nationally.

The effort normalizes ideas fueled by the anti-vaccine movement that Kennedy has helped lead for years. His Make America Healthy Again agenda masks anti-science ideas while promoting goals such as making food more natural or reducing chemicals. Meanwhile, vaccination rates continue to fall, allowing the infectious diseases measles and whooping cough to make comebacks as Kennedy has sought to broadly remake federal policies on public health matters including fluoride and vaccines.

“The march of conspiracy thinking from the margins to the mainstream now guiding public policy should be a wake-up call for all Americans,” said Devin Burghart, president and executive director of the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, who has tracked the anti-vaccine movement for decades. “People are literally going to die from it as a result.”

… and for our children and grandchildren. No matter how much we try to resist, the forces of willful ignorance will gain some ground with these efforts… to the detriment of our people and our environment.

we are going to be looking at a whole different kind of society.

I picture it as our version of a Hieronymus Bosch painting,
filled with grotesque peasants, plague, and pestilence.

There will definitely be a whole lot of unnecessary suffering
and death, and I suspect a good deal of migration among
the better off... if they're allowed to.

(uneducated) It's why they cut education. They don't want government protecting people in ANY way. With government out of the way, corporations and other predators can strip you of everything you have, including your life and liberty. And you can forget pursuing happiness, unless it conforms to the corporate masters' vision.

I'm thinking there is a book in this--The Superhighway to Serfdom.

Our dentists are well fed.

It’s gross really. Bunch of nonsense from people who mostly drink bottled water anyway but made it so people’s kids can’t have strong teeth.

It’s not just trump and his lackeys it’s the whole party across the nation that want their neighbors sick or dead. They literally want all the rest of us gone. It is the ultimate example of greed. It’s not just a few people. We need to acknowledge this.

It's culture war shit coming from christ (=church shit mixed with state). Fuck christ, give me science. Sleeping with one's enemy (christ), is not being woke, it's being comatose. Signed: Fed up with christ.

All confirmation Bibles, received at various points in our lives, my father's was the oldest. My parents were both alive when I somehow came into possession of their Bibles, IDR how, so how much did the Bibles really mean to them anyway?

Seen on the internet: Satan was the first resistor to an authoritarian regime.

"You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, burning bushes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say that we are the ones that need help?"

I can see California using these Check Points to verify that you've been vaccinated if you want to enter the state.
When anyone travels to certain parts of the world, we are required to get shots to keep us safe.

I can see that happening when anyone wants to come to California, or any other states that require, from its citizens, vaccinations.
I know it's harsh, and tourism would suffer, but if you haven't been vaccinated against TB or measles, they risk infecting everyone.

I’m an amateur historian and I’ve always been fascinated with the fall of civilizations.

Our civilization is falling. As always it is sudden and precipitous.

Some sort of equilibrium will emerge. But it may not be anything anyone desires. It is close to impossible to predict how long it will take and how many millions/billions will die.

I mourn for not just our country but our world.

no longer want, nor need, a world populated with 8B+ human beings. They have judged it to be contrary to their greed-addicted interests.

Trump is part of that particular cohort, and he is a more-than-willing accomplice to their desired World Depopulation outcome, because he's a textbook sociopath who gets a megalomaniacal thrill out of ordering people's deaths.

Now, the world DOES need VOLUNTARY depopulation, very clearly in my view, otherwise the principles of physics (especially energy physics) and chemistry WILL depopulate the world for us, and in the relatively near future, and we're not going like how that goes down.

That said, by FAR the most ethical way to accomplish that is to convince humans to stop making babies. Condoms, IUD's, birth control pills, and "tube tying" operations should all be near free, and people should be told outright by their leaders that its essential for the future of humanity for them to stop having kids. If humanity were in its right mind, having babies should be viewed as much more immoral than having abortions.

But of course, that's the opposite of what the Christo-Fascist cohort wants to promulgate, so the sensible (and obviously morally correct) thing is not going to be done
