A few replies to Richard Angwin's tweet:

All governments suffer a recurring problem:
Power attracts pathological personalities.
It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.

That really sums it up perfectly.

(40,389 posts)Certainly it takes a big dose of narcissism and hubris just to present yourself as a candidate.

(136 posts)In this state of political reality, one cannot compete without a huge amount of money supplied by the elites who perpetuate the system based on hubris and narcissism. So billionaires decide who becomes a viable candidate and expect a return on their investments when that candidate is elected. It may take generations to correct this situation. Perhaps if there is a catastrophic event, this system may implode when the damage is blamed on those elites. I've always wondered why some billionaires don't get together and act more altruistically to elevate all members of society. How much is enough? We may reach a tipping point at which billionaires will realize that extreme income inequality and its resulting politics is bad for business and society at large because it lacks stability and social cohesion. And it will become increasingly impossible for them to believe that their great wealth can shield them from a dystopian hellscape of environmental collapse, chaos and war. So what if a candidate with the right kind of hubris is elected? Maybe one who has a messiah complex and wishes to heal the nation with a renewed sprit of genuine public service.

Give a Billion $ to Gandhi, and what would he do?
Or give a Billion to Mother Theresa
Or give a Billion to Jesus

(51,260 posts)After I posted, I found the rest of the quote: "Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted." Frank Herbert, Chapterhouse: Dune
That certainly captures the madness we're witnessing today. Herbert was a republican and an environmentalist, but that was back in the day when most republicans were still fundamentally sane. He died in 1986 so I wonder what he'd think of his party today.

(2,946 posts)... for "TOTAL DOMINION OVER THE LIVES OF OTHERS".
Maybe if we used the long form to describe the concept, it would sound a little less benign to those destined to be "OTHERS".
Right now, we're witnessing the truth of Mr. Herbert's words in real time. And it's only going to get worse with Trump. MUCH worse.
He has got to be removed from the Oval Office. I'm long past caring how.
