https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumps-big-meeting-with-putin-has-already-hit-a-major-snag/Trump has suffered yet another setback in his quest to end Russias invasion of Ukraine after a meeting between key aides fell apart, reports claim.
The president has been vying for bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary, stating on October 16 that he hoped they would take place within two weeks.
After speaking with Putin on the phone Trump said it had been agreed that there will be a meeting of our high level advisors, next week, as a prelude.
The United States initial meetings will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, together with various other people, to be designated, Trump wrote on Truth Social. Secretary of State Marco Rubios Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, would also be in attendance.

How unsurprising.

(20,605 posts)Trump's been whistling past the graveyard on this for 10 months, trying his best to pretend that he cares while being very careful not to rub Putin the wrong way. I doubt that Trump...recipient of "beautiful love letters from Kim Jong Un"...will EVER see Putin as "a lost cause." But if he DID, and he did the right thing, this COULD be OVER. Not tomorrow, but this could be the last year of this atrocity.
I am not counting on that happening, of course.

(40,709 posts)Actually, Im surprised he has even pushed back at times. But we know what his default setting is: appeasement bordering on total capitulation.
Fortunately (in a dark way), Putins aims are so extreme relative to his ability to achieve them that even Trump cant help him get there. Unless, speaking of darkness, he switches sides of course.

(20,605 posts)More than anything, he wanted to be accepted / feared / respected by the upper echelons of New York Society, and they all laughed at him for being the biggest joke on the planet.
Princess Ivanka eagerly dreamed of being the TOAST of NYC's high society, until New York's high society told her and Jared to eff off, so they accepted the consolation prize of a $24 million mansion in Florida. SAD! UNFAIR!
And, similarly, Trump will continue to receive the same kind of reception on the world stage, because he's earned it, and deserved it. Threatening and serially disrespecting world leaders isn't going to win their love. That only works for Republicans in the U.S.A.

(25,369 posts)More BS, who could have guessed? Yet our mighty press corps somehow failed to follow up on any intended specifics of this amazing diplomatic feat during the campaign. Maybe the press will find its journalistic integrity hidden under F47's Nobel prize? I hope all involved receive everything they so richly deserve.
