Nicholas Gilbert- a NY dairy farmer- truly believed that other countries would pay for the tariffs. Instead he received a Trump surcharge fees that he cannot pass on to consumers (because he belongs to a co-op.) His farm has gone bankrupt and will close in 2 months

But, cult members don't research anything after the leaders says whatever the leader says. Even they they claim to do their "own research".

Well, there's a section of the brain, little used by many, that seeks truth, because not only can truth set you free, IT CAN PREVENT YOU FROM GETTING TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS.
That "other" part of the brain, that reacts to danger and fear, REAL OR IMAGINARY, often "wins"

(17,285 posts)Check the definition of tariff in any standard dictionary. It is very clear what a tariff is, it is a specific thing not some vague catchall term.
Check how tariffs worked (as in, who paid them and in what manner) the last time The Convicted Felon was POTUS. That information is publicly available. There you have recent historical evidence of the exact phenomenon in question.
If you won't "truly believe" the above evidence in favor of the mouth noises of TCF, there is nothing anyone else can say to stop you from destroying yourself.

(25,307 posts)as a responsible businessperson, you truly should have been aware of who pays for these tariffs and not the nonsense that you believed. Now it's too late, and you sank the ship on your own dime, your own stupidity, your own actions. Not much to add to this, eh?

Nicholas Gilbert, a dairy farmer from Potsdam, New York, is facing tough economic lessons in the middle of President Donald Trumps ongoing trade war. Like many others in border towns, Gilbert assumed tariffs would be Canadas problemnot his.
But when a recent livestock feed order from Ontario arrived, Gilbert was shocked to see it cost him $2,200 more than usual. The extra cost was due to tariffs, which he thought would be handled by the Canadian supplier. Instead, the bill landed squarely on his shoulders.
Im not even sure its legal! Gilbert told The Atlantic. We contracted for the price on delivery. If your pr ..
Unfortunately for Gilbert and many others, tariffs are legaland theyre paid by American importers, not Canadian exporters.
Why did the farmer think Canada would pay the tariff?
Like many small business owners and farmers, Gilbert believed what President Trump has often repeatedthat other countries would bear the brunt of the tariffs. But thats not how the system works................
