While on CNN's "State of the Union," the Wisconsin Republican told host Jake Tapper there are enough Republicans in the Senate willing to kill the bill presented by House Speaker MIke Johnson (R-LA) unless it undergoes a major re-write.
After excitedly detailing the many ways the bill, as it currently stands, will massively add to the national debt, Johnson was asked by host Tapper, "We're almost out of time, but I'm just wondering if you could just give me a number, how many other Republican senators do you think share your concerns and are willing to make work to make major changes to this bill?"
"I think we have enough to stop the process until the president gets serious about spending reduction and reducing the deficit," Johnson shot back.
At the same time that Johnson was on CNN, Sen Rand Paul (R-KY) was making the same case on Fox, telling host Shannon Bream, "Somebody has to stand up and yell, the emperor has no clothes, and everybody's falling in lockstep on this, passed the big, beautiful bill, don't question anything."

(98,743 posts)have health care or food stamps? Do we let the poor die and go hungry?
Ask them why not talk about taxing the wealthiest Americans, why cutting from programs that people HAVE PAID INTO ALL THEIR LIVES?
Why not raise the CAP on Social Security.
There are a lot of questions that no one in our illustrious media ever asks.
It's the elephant in the room.
My prediction, the rethugs will pass trump's boon doogle, and it will even be worse than the deplorable House plan.

(5,969 posts)Speaker (not Ron) Johnson stated that Medicaid is not cutting anyone, just forcing 4.8 million single able-bodied men to work. No followup from Tapper though. It's the followup that's needed not just the questions.

(4,442 posts)The income multiplier is drastically higher for food stamps and medical aid than any giveaways to the wealthy. The wealthy shuffle their money in their inbred circle, rarely spending much where it helps the lower half. We have to change our messaging on this, the typical GOP voter cares not a whit for SNAP and Medicaid recipients but they might care that the wealthy won't help them. This isn't theoretical anymore every GOP administration over the last 100 years has caused recessions, often severe ones.

He says he was there on a trade mission but he says it with the smirk of a proud liar.

(5,127 posts)Collins and Murkowski's issues with the bill are completely different from Johnson and Paul's. When Johnson says he thinks they have enough to force the changes, he's not talking about Collins & Murkowski. He's implying that there other unnamed Senators who agree that significant additional cuts are needed. I don't necessarily believe him on that but I do completely believe he won't vote for the bill without the changes. There are still others with issues (Hawley and Moran for 2) that it pretty much guarantees changes will have to be made to the House passed version to get the 50 votes it needs in the Senate. It remains to be seen what changes will be made in order to get those 50 votes. I suspect they will make more minor tweaks on medicaid and other issues to get the hooldouts and Johnson & Paul will vote against the final bill.

(5,127 posts)He wants to cut pretty much ALL government spending other than defense. As cruel as all other Republicans other, most are not stupid enough to make the significant cuts Johnson & Paul want - they know it would be political suicide.

(238 posts)spineless, gutless Trump-humper who will never stand in Trump's way.
He's one of those multimillionaires who took a $250,000 per year gig as a US Senator so he could cut out the lobbiests and directly legislate his trickle down agenda. He's got no sense of service to his constituency. None.
Contrast that with Wisconsins other Senator, Tammy Baldwin. She is morally superior to Ron in every way. She fights as hard as she can to make the world a better place for all of us. She is worthy of the respect and trust of everyone she represents.

Or, theyll designate one Senator principled and let him/her stand in opposition while the others vote in lockstep.

(876 posts)they have socked away $600 million to help during the midterms. It was announced just a day or two before the House Budget vote.
That is the carrot, the personal phone call from the Felon was the stick.
The Felon does not give money away, he only makes a lot of noise about giving money away. He gives away things that don't cost him anything, like appointments and positions.

Nor is he touching on the portions which facilitate "the unitary executive" powers that would make POTUS an out-and-out dictator.
