FAA ground stop at Austin airport over staffing issues

Brandi D. Addison

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Wednesday, delaying more than 100 flights amid ongoing staffing shortages — part of a broader national trend straining the air traffic control system.

The disruption comes as Newark Liberty International Airport, one of the nation’s busiest hubs, enters its fourth week of significant delays and, more recently, flight caps due to a combination of staffing shortages, recent technological failures, and ongoing runway construction.

The FAA, currently facing a shortfall of thousands of air traffic controllers, recently terminated hundreds of probationary employees and is now scrambling to recruit replacements ...

There had been warning signs before radar and communications systems went dark at the facility that manages the airspace around Newark Liberty International Airport, according to an air traffic controller who was on duty during one of those failures.

Still, their first reaction was shock.

"It was like disbelief. And then it was just like fury, honestly, like how could they have us working this, you know?," said the controller, who works in Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which manages the airspace around Newark. They asked NPR not to use their name because they're not authorized to speak publicly and are worried about retaliation from their employer, the Federal Aviation Administration.

"We had had other outages prior to that point that demonstrated to us that our equipment was unreliable," the controller said in an interview this week. Those earlier incidents were alarming enough, the controller says, that controllers handling Newark asked the FAA to reduce the number of planes in the airspace ...

At least 120 flights have been delayed on Monday for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, following ground stops on Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned travelers of more potential ground stops in Atlanta on Monday, after two separate instances of ground stops on Sunday that caused hundreds of flight delays due to runway equipment issues.

According to Flight Aware, which tracks delays and cancelations across the U.S., at least 120 flights have been delayed on Monday (within, into, or out of Atlanta).

The FAA reported that the problems, which included a runway equipment issue, an air traffic control equipment outage and thunderstorms, caused significant disruptions, impacting travelers with flight delays and cancellations ...
