so far several of them are denouncing the "big beautiful bill" and voicing their intent not to vote for it:
Rand Paul (i know, right?)
Lisa Murkowski
Ron Johnson
Josh Hawley
Susan Collins
Jerry Moran
GOP senators are calling for a rewrite of the bill to address concerns ranging from Medicaid reforms and the phaseout of clean energy incentives to the sale of government-owned spectrum bands and the bills projected impact on the federal debt.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) immediately announced his opposition to the House-passed bill Thursday, vowing to vote against it unless Senate Republican leaders remove a provision to raise the federal debt limit by $4 trillion over the next two years.
Weve never, ever voted to raise the debt ceiling this much. Itll be a historic increase. I think its not good for conservatives to be on the record supporting a $4 trillion or $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, he said.
The anticipated deficits per year now will be $2 trillion a year for the next two years, he added. Its not conservative; I cant support it.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), an outspoken fiscal hawk, said Thursday that there are four Senate Republican conservatives who will vote against the House bill as currently drafted, which would be enough to sink the bill if there is full attendance.
There should be a goal of this Republican Senate budget resolution to reduce the deficit, not increase it. Were increasing it. Its a nonstarter from my standpoint, he said.
A group of Senate Republicans concerned about Medicaid reforms pose another major obstacle to the bill. This group includes Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.).

(14,559 posts)The parliamentarian said it couldn't be there, since it has nothing to do with the budget. But, apparently, parliamentarian decisions have been deemed only "advisory" and they voted to ignore it.

(13,020 posts)Susan Collins, though. She has noodle legs.
The Republican reps who caved on the House vote reportedly received threats to their families. This is serious mob shit.

(23,676 posts)You absolutely KNOW the GOP Senate will pass the bill.
After all, the accepted almost all of Trump's cabinet picks including Hegseth, Bondi and Gabbard.
We'll see what new hell happens this summer.

(5,130 posts)They will NOT pass the bill that the House passed without making significant changes to it. They'll eventually agree to something which will get the necessary 50 votes. But no way Paul & Johnson vote for it unless there are significantly greater spending cuts.
So it remains to be seen what kind of balance the can strike to get the necessary votes. I expect that they will just write off Paul and Johnson as un-gettable and try to come up something that everybody else can put up with. I think there are definitely a lot more Republicans in the Senate who would be uncomfortable with making the kind of cuts Paul & Johnson want (not to mention probable opposition in the house). Despite occasional screaming about it, pretty much everyone else in the Senate will have no problem agreeing to raise the deficit and the debt ceiling significantly. The only thing they all agree upon is that the #1 priority is the tax cuts for billionaires.

(59,977 posts)Maybe the senators will do better. Of course Susan Collins will voice her concern until someone tells her when to toe the line.

(76,780 posts)I think that they will vote against it, for a few reasons. First, they know it is cruel, unethical, and immoral. Second, they know the voting public recognizes that it is cruel, unethical, and immoral.
In normal times -- whatever is "normal" -- they would express some very sincere concerns, but vote for it. Yet though they inhabit the Senate, they know if they vote "yeah," the House becomes very Democratic in the 2016 elections, and the Senate could face serious challenges.

(9,013 posts)I remember some saying that because they held rallies in blue dots in red states that the Republicans were "on their back foot" and hearing so much from their constituents that didn't want them to cut Medicaid that they were going to vote against the bill -- yeah, that didn't happen.
The Senate will pass Trump's bill, one way or the other.

(5,130 posts)to get the group of Senators who object on that basis onboard. I think they will write off Ron Johnson's & Rand Paul's votes because they're the only 2 screaming about the deficit and debt ceiling. Despite pretending to care when a Democrat is in the White House, the rest of the Republican party doesn't give a damn how much the deficit and debt ceiling need to be increased as long as the billionaires get their tax cuts.
