Rambling West Point address about trophy wives, golf and Al Capone

Katie Hawkinson
in Washington, D.C.
Saturday 24 May 2025 18:15 BST

... “An example is a great athlete, Gary Player, great golfer ... He’s a friend of mine, he gets a little angry at people ... “He said, ‘I hit the ball further than them. Why am I small?’ ...

Trump then pivoted to a discussion about real estate developer William Levitt ...

“He was great at what he did,” Trump said of Levitt. “You see him all over the country, still Levittowns. This was a long time ago, but he was a first of the really, really big home builders, and he became very rich, a very rich man, and then he decided to sell ... He ended up getting a divorce, found a new wife. Could you say a trophy wife? I guess we can say a trophy wife. It didn't work out too well, but it doesn't – that doesn't work out too well, I must tell ya. A lot of trophy wives” ...

“I was investigated more than the great late Alphonse Capone,” Trump told the West Point graduates ...

Disappointing that POTUS didn't stay to shake hands with the West Point graduates but left halfway through commencement. A nice tradition from many commanders in chief.

In the middle of an hour-long graduation speech at West Point, wearing a red MAGA hat, Trump starts rambling about trophy wives: "He ended up getting a divorce, found a new wife...Could you say a trophy wife?...I guess we can say a trophy wife...It didn't work out too well, but it doesn't, and that doesn't work out too well, I must tell you...A lot of trophy wives doesn't (sic) work out...But it made them happy for a little while at least...But he found a new wife, he sold his little boat and he got a big yacht...he had one of the biggest yachts anywhere in the world..."

It was nothing more than an hour of $trump patting himself on the back and kissing his own ass. What a pity that these cadets who worked so hard for the past four years had to endure his self-praising blubber, and didn't have a speaker representative of their efforts. It should have been a day of great celebration and instead was an insult to the graduates and an embarrassment to the nation.

featured a lovely little commencement address from Kermit the Frog (UMD is the alma mater of both Jim Henson and his wife). They called it "unserious."

And here's Trump babbling and weaving about trophy wives and Levitt's yacht size at...checks notes...The United States Military Academy?

Disgusting and truly beneath the dignity of everyone there but Trump.

trump gave a horrible speech and then left without shaking the hands of each graduate. Presidents Obama and Biden each took the time to shake the hand of each graduate

When President Obama spoke at the 2014 West Point commencement ceremony he shook the hand of every single graduate after his speech. Today, Donald Trump gave a speech while wearing a MAGA hat and then left without shaking any hands

I like Presidents who don’t use West Point as a political prop.

President Biden spent 70 minutes congratulating, saluting and shaking the hand of each one of the 1,036 West Point graduates, plus gave his speech, but it’s not worth any commentary by the media.
So you know he did well.

Trump has time to host a dinner for the rich crypto guys who bought his memecoin, but not to shake hands with West Point graduates. Priorities.
