Here is what is listed on the state's requirements for a Real ID:
Applicants must verify their identity and date of birth by providing one of the following documents*:
-Valid, unexpired United States Passport
-Certified Birth Certificate issued by a State Office of Vital Statistics
-Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545
-Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)
-Unexpired employment authorization document (EAD) issued by DHS (Form I-766 or Form I-688B)
-Unexpired Foreign Passport with a valid, unexpired U.S. Visa affixed, accompanied by the approved I-94 form documenting the applicant’s most recent admittance into the United States.
-Certificate of Naturalization issued by DHS (Form N-550 or N-570)
-Certificate of Citizenship issued by DHS (Form N-560 or N-561)

That is in addition to proof of Social Security number, and proof of principal address.

Only tens of millions of them.

To get a certified marriage license which is required and used to take 2 weeks to get, now takes almost a year to receive.

Additionally, it's a 3-4 week wait to even get into DMV. It's by appointment only now, when you used to be able to walk right in.

This is due to how big a deal it really is.

If there are too many procrastinators, the system can be overwhelmed causing delays.

Real ID isn't new. People have renewed their driver license more than once since it was established. You can drive with a standard license and you can fly with a passport.

I did all the BS when I moved to Ohio...it didn't count of course although they said it would. I needed a birth certificate, Marriage papers and divorce papers from a brief marriage at 18 and marriage papers for my current marriage. It cost me $80.00. This has always been about eliminating voters...many can't provide the documents and shouldn't have to. This used to be a free country...and those that throw an innocent person in prison with no evidence should be fired and prosecuted...and to those who are doing this now, I suggest you watch the movie about the nuremberg trials...some of you will pay a heavy price for you unconstitutional actions. I cant wait.

Cashing checks, buying liquor, flying on an airplane, driving a car, getting a mortgage, car loan or voting, all require people to "show their papers"

Obtaining the documents to trace one or more name changes takes time and money. You have to trace your name change back to your birth certificate, which can mean getting formal copies of multiple name-changing documents.

Name changes are much more frequent for women than men, so the process impose a burden which falls predominantly on the shoulders of women to bear.

Beyond the relatively direct impact on women, people with means and stable lives are both more likely to have the documents in their possession, and if they don't to be able to afford the time and money it takes to get copies of them.

So the people who don't have a RealID are more likely to be women, and people who struggle, generally, with life. And if the SAVE act passes, even a RealID will not be sufficient for voting, because it does not, generally, prove citizenship.

To be fair though, the REAL ID thing has been ongoing for years now with multiple "deadlines". Wouldn't it have been wise to have had those documents in hand already?

Don't wait till the last minute.

Identity and date of birth.

Yes -SOME of the items to establish identity and date of birth also prove citizenship - but because you do not have to provide one of the citizenship proving documents in order to get a RealID, the RealID only proves what the minimal documentation proves.

MN, MI, VT, NY, WA, and all Northern border states offer RealIDs which prove citizenship. They include the word "enhanced" or a gold star. The others do not prove citizenship.

Many people, including whoever wrote the article assume that it proves citizenship.

So yes, the police need an education as to what a RealID looks like. But even if they recognized it as real, it still doesn't prove citizenship - which is the ultimate question.

which means that under the current rules under which ICE is operating, even US citizens whose ancestors came here on the Mayflower can be held without habeas corpus and possibly even deported if they don't have the opportunity to prove who they are. Merely showing ICE documents is not sufficient. Even real documents such as REAL ID can be obtained with fake documents, or real stolen documents.
