There’s a saying along those lines which I think applies here. Americans are spoiled, too easily entertained and too far removed from what it actually took to get to this place of relative comfort. Few are alive now to recount the blood and bodies that it took to get labor rights, to fight fascism, to gain civil rights and some basic services.

It might be unpopular to say, even around here, but capitalism eats everything around it and is absolute poison for a society that wants to be civilized. There’s nothing civilized about it.

I don’t think things always have to be mean and meager to keep everyone’s teeth sharp, we were supposed to remember the fight and be ready to fight again if necessary. We’ve failed to remember. We, as a whole, let the bad guys win.

about capitalism. It has lifted more people out of poverty than anything else ever tried. Its far from perfect and we have a long way to go. But I'm not aware of a better system. (I fully expect to have an email informing me that this post has been deleted and I have a strike as I assume this is a dreaded and super evil "right wing talking point.&quot

"Weak men create hard times.
Hard times create strong men.
Strong men create good times.
Good times create weak men."

I agree with you, its true. And right now we have (along the long arc of the history of the human race) good times and weak men.

And I agree, although I do not long for toil and bloodshed, people need to remember what it took to found this nation, and the steps that can (if necessary) be taken -- lawfully -- to defend it from evil and tyranny.

but I can tell you this: after many decades on this rock, knowing humans the way that I do, my gut tells me that its been millennia since we've had a truly "free and fair" election, if we ever have at all. Both sides (or all sides I guess, more accurately) cheat, connive, cajole, and otherwise tamper in an attempt to guarantee one outcome or another. I think its built in to the human condition: to win at any cost, especially if the perception is that it can be done without repercussion. I don't think any political party, politician, candidate, etc., is completely innocent. Not a single one.

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
— JFK

If we somehow survive this tyranny (which means nothing less than an utterly humiliating defeat of Trump, MAGA, and their enablers), we need a new constitution. The 1787 model has been shredded by system exploits, cowardice, and political solutions to satisfy the worst among us. It's how we got to where we are now. Sure, parts of it can be used as source material for the next constitution, but a complete reversion to it after surviving tyranny and thinking a regime/wannabe dynasty like this one won't capture the executive branch again is naive.

Future generations of Americans (or whatever we'll be known as then) deserve better. The constitution we currently have does not qualify as such.

Removal of 3/5 - which leads to the end of the Electoral College.

Laws like Europe which outlaw racist, anti-Semitic, prejudicial speech.

Symbols outlawed as well - Confederate Flags, Traitor Holidays of the Confederates, third Reich flags.

Special Congressional Districts for Indigenous Reservations.

Presidential Elections of one person, one vote, National Holidays for Federal Elections. We vote in three rounds to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Taxes go back to the 1940's / 50's. My paternal grandfather, a Black man in the South paid the highest rate and got nothing in return. He had to build the Equal school for his children on top of those onerous taxes. Let Elon Musk know how it feels.

Anyone who thinks these things are impossible? Guess who is up for NJ State Democratic Committee this year? Stop me if you can. I'm on the inside. That's how you bring change. If not? I'll bring a folding chair.

They have impunity and immunity.

It’s only been four months, I shudder to think what this is all going to look like after four years.

The sad fact is, most people really have no idea what is actually happening, they don’t follow politics closely at all. Of those who do, half are caught in the cult bubble and think this is great and then there’s us.

No one wants to discuss what it would actually take to make an attempt to put an end to this, let alone do it. It’s too inconvenient, it’s too painful, it’s too horrifying.

One thing is for sure though, your reaction, which is perfectly understandable, is exactly what makes the MAGAts happy. It’s the sole reason they voted as they did. As difficult as it is, try not to give them the satisfaction.

Fri May 23, 2025, 09:35 PM
May 23

How does the main concept or a concept of a video, or zen parable, or sutra, or joke apply to the current situation and meditate on that until you come up with some kind of an answer, some kind of a connection, even a joke (though true flippancy is a zen skill indeed). Some way each concept relates to your (our) current situation. Making the connection really does help make it lighter and easier to bear.

The current situation just is.

There are things you can do, things you can't influence directly, and (one hopes) the wisdom to tell the two apart. The ones you can't influence directly, well they are out of your control, so letting go of them can only benefit you. If you find the ones you can do, choose one (any one) and do it. That help too. Many will recognize that in many forms.

Use the first paragraph as the analysis and the previous one as an organizer.

Meditation is all about guiding the Ox of your mind back to the task at hand, be it cleaning the dishes or watching your breath while seated. There are ten stages of Ox herding.

The main thing about meditation is to do some. When you can and you want to. Cultivating the idea of wanting to doing some. Training helps but training is not necessary; starting is necessary.

Always maintain a Beginner's Mind. The thing Roshi Suzuki liked best about America was Beginner's Mind.

And like first time prisoners, we initially think there is no way you're going to make it. They can lock up your body but not your mind. Let your mind run free. Distract it and it might help.

Unlike movies that portray prisoners scratching out the days on a wall. Some inmates soon learn to not think about their past lives but concentrate on surviving their current life. They look forward to the little things like canteen day, yard time and yes socializing. Certainly, we that have more freedom can find distractions.

We Democrats are like political prisoners in a foreign country. But, like the cicadas we will rise once again in the distant future and make a noise like the world has never seen before, as evidenced by those making the sacrifice and protesting.
That, my friend, is worth surviving it .

I’m A Psychologist Who Specializes In Narcissists. Here’s What We Need To Do To Stop Trump.
By
Jocelyn Sze
May 23, 2025, 07:52 AM EDT
|Updated May 23, 2025

The Trump administration is planning a June 14 military parade to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army — and the president’s 79th birthday. When your sense of self-exaltation requires tanks, flyovers and up to $45 million for a birthday party, we’re no longer in the realm of cake and candles — we’re squarely in Criterion 1 of narcissistic personality disorder: “a grandiose sense of self-importance.”

Snip

Of the dizzying array of tactics, perhaps the most effective is crisis manufacturing. The constant emergencies aren’t flukes — they’re by design. They keep everyone in survival mode, distracting from deeper issues and ensuring the narcissist stays at the center of attention and control. For my patients who have survived narcissistic abuse, it might be an explosive tantrum, a threat to seek full custody or a frantic late-night call about a (fabricated) mugging. On the national stage, it takes the form of rhetorical escalations, legal threats or emergency declarations designed to dominate the news cycle and overwhelm opposition.

Snip

But recovery begins when people stop playing along or exhausting energy in cycles of infighting. Instead of spending precious bandwidth on disbelief or outrage, the goal is to name the tactic, call out the harm, cultivate trusted support and let go of what is beyond your control. Persistent engagement in shock, bargaining or rumination often reflects the mind’s attempt to delay the grief associated with profound loss — private and emotional for my patients, social and institutional for our country.

Snip

And above all, keep faith in the long game. While narcissistic dynamics rely on urgency and alarm, deep change comes from staying calm, clear and connected. In defending against narcissistic control, the answer is never to mimic harmful tactics — it is to recognize them, grieve their damage, stop enabling them and break out of reactivity. Boundaries, civic mobilization and long-haul strategy are how we begin to heal the democratic spirit. In both therapy and democracy, healing begins the moment we stop reacting and start remembering who we are.

More

"A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Declaration of Independence

My advice - go fishing, camping or whatever makes you happy. Put down the phone. Stop reading the news and social media for 48 hours.

Breathe.
