NJ-GOV: Sherrill (D) pulls further away from the pack in her latest internal poll
With this years gubernatorial primary debates in the rearview mirror and Election Day less than three weeks away, internal polling from Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) shows her solidifying her lead as her five Democratic opponents begin to focus their attention on her.
According to the poll, conducted by Global Strategy Group, Sherrill has support from 33% of likely Democratic primary voters more than double the 16% received by her closest competitor, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop. The poll puts Newark Mayor Ras Baraka at 15%, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) at 11%, former State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-West Deptford) at 7%, and New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller at 6%.
(Those numbers include leaners; without including voters leaning towards one candidate, Sherrill gets 30% and Fulop and Baraka are tied for second at 14%. Around one-fifth of voters on the initial ballot test hadnt made up their minds; after leaners were allocated to one candidate, that number fell to 12%.)
The poll, like all internals, should be viewed with some caution, since it was released specifically to benefit Sherrill. But it does align with other publicly released polling of the race, both from independent pollsters and from internal polls sponsored by Sherrills opponents, all of which have found the four-term congresswoman in the lead; a recent Emerson poll gave Sherrill an even larger lead than todays internal.
