Democratic nominee in 2028 and wins the presidency. And suppose he runs for reelection in 2032. If that happens, I'll be very disappointed in the Democratic Party if in 2032 they don't choose the campaign slogan RE-PETE!

IMO we'll be better off, considering the present-day maga dominated zeitgeist, with a straight, white male candidate in '28.
And this from a Black male who has campaigned for Obama twice, Hillary and Biden/Harris.

(1,738 posts)And I will also not be donating any money or time this time around to any straight white male Christian candidates (don't forget to include Christian--because if we're excluding Buttigieg for being gay, y'all don't get Josh Shapiro or Pritzger either.)
Personally, I think this attitude is shooting ourselves in the foot. We need to get democratic voters excited and get those voters to the polls. We need to lose this idea that we are going to get conservative magats to switch sides. They are going to vote for their candidate every time.

I however, want to win.

(1,738 posts)He's the smartest mind in our party, and he inspires hope. Hearing him talk at rallies reminds me of Obama back in 2004. Back then, no one thought the country would elect a black man with a funny name either. So the naysayers can just keep naysaying.
The moment democrats decide our candidate can only be a straight white Christian male, we are letting magats choose the republican candidate AND the democratic candidate.
I am not okay with that. I don't think our voters are going to turn out to the polls and be enthusiastic to vote for our candidate when we are being told that they only had 15% of the potential field to choose from. That every female candidate is out. LGBT candidates are out. Jewish candidates are out. Muslim candidates are out. Black and Hispanic and Asian candidates are out. I think if that's your attitude, you're already a republican.

(24,409 posts)Those who think differently really are not in touch with reality and have their heads somewhere else. I'm sure our primaries will guide us to the candidate we need to win rather than surrender to unrestrained idealism (how did that work out for Hillary and Harris?)

(1,738 posts)which will not be a white christian straight male. And if that person is the candidate in the general, they will not be getting a dime of support from me because I will consider them chosen by the magats. Sorry. We need to get back to democratic values. Having maga choose our candidates is taking the party in the wrong direction.

(24,409 posts)Some I knew would lose and they did. If our next candidate were Buttigieg (who I believe is eminently qualified) I would vote for him with the knowledge he would likely lose.
Democrats...we are such an idealistic bunch. We lose 2 out of the last 3 elections with s female candidate and then think nothing of choosing an openly gay male as our candidate.
Let's be real here...Buttigieg would never make it past the primaries. This is a vital election, one that Democrats MUST win, so we must pick a safe and electable candidate. This is NOT the time to take a risk. Let's recover America because another Republican president would finish us off if we survive the one we have.

(210 posts)Than mayor of a small town. Had he been a Secretary of State (or other prestigious cabinet position), Id say he should consider a run. Former secretary of transportation for one term is going to be hard sell for many, even aside from obvious homophobia he would face.
He should run for governor or senator of Michigan and win. Showing he could win statewide office in a crucial swing state would go a long way in the primaries convincing a democratic electorate that is nervous about venturing too far away from going with a safe white boy. This fear is understandable.
Its too much of a gamble nominating him to be president knowing the electorate we have.

Whether he decides to run in 2028 ... well only he knows for sure. There have been rumors that he intends to run for the Senate now that he lives in Michigan. For what it's worth, South Bend, Indiana is probably a 30-minute walk to the Michigan border ... it's only a few miles south of the border.
If Pete decides on running for the Senate, he'll get still have plenty of time to run for President later on.

I lived in Elkhart, which is 20 miles from South Bend and also very close to the Michigan border. Somewhere between Elkhart and South Bend there's an invisible border that separates blood-red Indiana from Chicagoland.
