two bottles of Pepsi
two boxes of decaf coffee
two boxes of cat food
one package of oatmeal raisin cookies
one large bag of potato chips
two packs of pens
one loaf of bread
total cost $100.84
Trump says food prices are coming down.

Eat the Tartiffs we pay less for Groceries, (that amazing word trump invented). Tariffs are very filling, and drink some RFK sewer water to make them swell in your belly. Lots of packets of fake ketchup can be found in the dumpsters at Fast Food places. Free for some flavor.
Plus, better health with supercharging your immune system with the sewage water.
tariffs are all we will be able to eat.

(7,352 posts)usual self and my appetite is evened out. I used to date a woman who drank Mountain Dew but she didn't drink it fresh or cold. She would open a bottle or can and leave it sit open for a day or so to let it go flat and to go to room temp. I got screamed at the first time I threw one away figuring it was "overlooked".

Weight is dropping, blood pressure is down, 1AC levels are dropping, cholesterol is dropping and so I'm pleased I made the change.

(92,180 posts)I have never been a soda drinker. I did drink flavored seltzer
it was too expensive and then the recycling. More than a decade ago I bought the soda stream, make my seltzer then add a lemon, lime or orange. Zip on calories and better for you. The carbonated cylinders arent cheap, about 14 dollars when you exchange the used one
but each cylinder gives you 60 liters! You can make soda by adding their flavors, they are carbonated at a higher speed than plain seltzer so they dont last as long, but still cheaper in the long run.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that total given your list.
Especially since your pop, cookies, chips, cat food, & bread are domestic.
If it were me, I'd check my receipt. That just seems preposterously inflated for that basket of goods.

(1,134 posts)Having several cats, we tend to buy large bags of dry food, and depending on the brand and size they range from about 16 to 35 dollars per bag. Same with canned catfood- we buy the multipacks (24-32 cans) and they run about 16 - 24 dollars per box.
ProfessorGAC
(72,881 posts)I read boxes of cat food. We buy big bags for the dog & medium size for the cats.
So yeah, that could drive the price up pretty fast.
But, when I saw "box" I was thinking a small amount, hence a lower cost as those 3 or 4 pound boxes are only around $5.
If the box/bag was bigger, sure, much costlier. The dry dog food we buy is $44 through Chewy.
SheltieLover
(68,651 posts)They also frequently send me $35 off order coupons.
Plus you don't have to pack in car & haul to house. They "magically" arrive on my doorstep.
Autoships are easy to update / delete items from & if your furkids don't like food or toys, they refund them with no problem.
I love Chewy!

(17,741 posts)Sure, some fruits and veggies are when they are out of season, but most staples are home grown. Very little meat that isn't gourmet or grain is imported. Dairy is not unless gourmet cheese.
In this case, it's the cost of labor, or lack thereof.
The tarrifs aren't the only causal item in the supply chain.

(7,671 posts)They identify the origin of everything. Most of the beef is from Mexico, USDA Angus, but from Mexico. Most fruits & veggies are imported too.
The one meat I know isn't imported is alligator, that's from Louisiana or Florida, & last week they were out which really disappointed me because I wanted to make gator steaks.
You're right about cheese, I think we're still paying a 25% tariff on imported Italian cheese that Trump put into effect during his first term. I couldn't find any evidence that it was ever repealed. There's nothing like real gorgonzola or parmigiano reggiano, so we pay it.

(7,352 posts)3 packs of water (24 in each 500mL size), 6 boxes of instant oatmeal packets. Walmart price was $36.58. The water was just a hair over $10.00 total. Yes I know it's bottled and the plastic and all but the tap water here is thoroughly gross. So bottled water is my corner of evil on the planet. There isn't a home delivery for the big jugs in my area and I'm gone so often at unscheduled times that a service doesn't work for me even if they were here.
Some of the various stores near me are holding steady on some food items. Some are pricing higher on non-food items.

(514 posts)The filters are expensive but they're supposed to last about 3 months (we use at least 1 full pitcher/day so we don't usually get 3 months).
They filter out so much that my dentist recommends adding trace mineral drops which are also pricey so it might not be a savings over the bottled water but the water tastes so good. No yucky metallic taste and the filtered water looks so crystal clear it's beautiful to see.
Just a thought, it might end up being cheaper.
moniss
(7,352 posts)before and the water tasted better but where I am is a chemicals situation and the various filters get the metals etc. but are less effective at some of these chemicals. PCB's and a long list of others from soup to nuts. Our public water intake in Lake Michigan is a short distance away from where a toxic waste dump poured stuff into the lake, now in the sediments, and also dumped thousands of gallons of toxic materials into open pits they dug and then covered them over. The stuff eventually oozed out of the bluff of the lake and into the water/sediments which added to what had already been dumped.
I've lived in this metro area for convenience but have always wanted to move back to the more rural area/towns.

(1,603 posts)Your list and price paid seems very unlikely. It would help if you clarified the prices of all items not just the Pepsi, which sounds normal.
I live in a shitty state that charges 10% tax on groceries and medicine so I understand that takes a bite but otherwise your list amounts to about $50 at the most in my area.

(14,230 posts)Most of the good quality cat food is made in Canada.
Also, a lot of the cheap kibble is made bulk in China, and packaged in the US, getting hit with the tariffs not only on the kibble, but the packaging, most of which is also made in China.
Even the big Name Brand kibble has a lot of Chinese components, both as part of the food product and in the packaging that is being passed off as US made to consumers.

I had plenty of brown rice and oatmeal. I used that as my base, along with the hefty, chopped leftovers of a roasted chicken I bought at Walmart the other day--I know it won't get eaten otherwise. I pressure cooked the chicken to soften all the bones (except for the thigh bone) so you can crush them between your fingers. I used the broth from pressure cooking the chicken, added brown rice, oatmeal some diced carrots that were leftover from my garden, and 3 partially used bags of frozen peas from the freezer. I don't know what it's going to taste like but it smells rather heavenly and I'll bet my dogs like it better than the $1/tiny can food I've been buying. I intend to freeze most of it after they eat dinner tonight. That way I can make sure they eat a good portion each day and none of it goes bad. They also eat dry food, but my old lady dog needs soft food. If my recipe is well-received, I think I'll keep making this--it'll definitely save me money.
Update: Those dogs SCARFED that food like they were starving to death! A 4 ounce servingwhich is slightly larger than those tiny cans took them twice as long to eat as one of those cans, although they were gobbling it up as fast as they could. I think Ive got a winning recipe!

(113,459 posts)so my delivery bill is up considerably. I can afford it but I imagine a lot of my friends are going back into poverty mode, something we all experienced far too often, usually thanks to Republican stupidity.
My health was always pretty wretched, so poverty would move in periodically like a freeloading relative I couldn't say no to and who wouldn't budge. I had to hunker down, cut way back, and wait for him to move on.
Economists warned us for two years that this would happen if that stupid man tried any of the bullshit he was putting into his campaign speeches. Well, he tried it and we're in a world of hurt and the shit show is just starting.
I don't know how far the real PTB will let it play out before these lunatics are removed, most sent off to spend more time with their families and a few to prison (just for show). Thats;s the best we can hope for unless this shit really manages to cause a major crash instead of just a catastrophe for the 99%. He really is ignorant, stubborn, and suffering from dementia, so we'll see.

(9,212 posts)I went there two days in a row because Im trying Colombian coffee beans now and first I tried it in the regular Mr. Coffee coffee maker I got for my brother a couple years ago as a gift. It came out really horrible. So I decided to get a French press. Made by Bodum- it was about $19 I think- I dont know if the price went up or not or if its too soon to see that
its about two dollars less than on their website.
I have noticed prices going up there since the pandemic on a lot of things so I often look elsewhere like dollar stores, etc.
I discovered that I do not like this coffee, it tastes horrible compared to my Folgers instance lol. Maybe Im not very good at making coffee from coffee beans. My mother used to do that years ago. I got the 8 oclock 100% Colombian coffee beans. Also at Walmart for about $15 for a 30 ounce bag and the generic Walmart grinder for about $12-$13.
The French press did make a stronger cup however I dont really like the flavor of it very much. It tastes like wine lol without the alcohol.😹
