Mexican Navy training ship that hit Brooklyn Bridge, killing 2, was moving in the 'wrong direction,' city official says

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/brooklyn-bridge-mexican-navy-ship-05-18-25-hnk

What we're covering
• Two people have died and more than a dozen others were injured, after a Mexican Navy training ship struck the bottom of the Brooklyn Bridge, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

• The ship, called Cuauhtémoc, was carrying 277 people when it “lost power” and struck the bridge, Adams said. It was on a global goodwill tour and en route to Iceland at the time of the incident Saturday night, officials said.

• The ship was moving in the “wrong direction,” a senior city official with knowledge of the investigation told CNN, pointing in part to the current of the East River.

• City officials earlier said “mechanical issues” may have caused the ship to strike the bridge, though the cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Yes I think that is the purpose of the tugboats to guide the larger ships and help them Meowmee May 18 #8

I couldnt see if there was a line between the two, but the tug was slightly ahead and to port of the sailboat.

Massive racketeering case against Huawei pending.

What else? Is there a connection?

I think this ship was visiting and it looks like an older sail boat? I'm not sure.

An unclassified memo issued by CISA, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said the ship reported losing propulsion. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the ship's crew reported a "power issue." A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the crash, said the agency still needs to verify that the Dali lost power before striking the bridge column.

The current caught the stern and took it into the bridge backwards. East River currents can run 6 knots or more.

I don't know. I am asking whether the tugboat had any responsibility for making sure that this vessel and others were able to safely steer through NY harbor.

I haven't read enough about this yet to give an opinion on what happened.
