A new book by CNN anchor Jake Tapper has ignited fierce criticism from liberals and media observers who accuse him of profiting from a narrative he once helped downplay: President Joe Biden's mental and physical decline during his final year in office.
The book, Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, co-authored with Axios journalist Alex Thompson, alleges that Biden's inner circle, including his family and top aides, orchestrated a comprehensive effort to obscure the president's deteriorating condition from the public, donors and even members of his own cabinet.
The claims have reverberated across the political spectrum, stirring both indignation and introspection within the Democratic Party.
Newsweek reached out for comment from Tapper via his publisher and CNN on Friday.

(1,446 posts)I've been called in to judge a couple of different discussions where people were criticising dems. It might've looked like a MAGA mole trying to stir up trouble. I get that.
And sometimes it's hard to tell - is this person a mole or this is just reality being presented and it's painful.
I knew when I saw Biden freezing up on the debate stage with Trump and having a really dificult time, it was over then.
Maybe the last minute Kamala replacement would win it, hoping it would be Kamala, but probably not.
There had been hints of Biden having problems from long term DU people here on this board who seemed to have somewhat of an inside track.
But an insider book revealing what had been only been surmised is now not surprising to me. It's confirming what I already suspected. I know Trump has been gaslighting everyone all along, but our own doing the gaslighting to us?
It wasn't a surprise that Trump was able to win.
And now a book helps us understand why Trump had it so easy.

(23,108 posts)I have one of what is generally referred to as "a source." Well before the debate that led to Biden withdrawing from the race. my friend (source) shared a concerning assessment of Joe Biden's declining ability told to him by a person who had a significant role in Biden's Administration with access to the President, who my friend had previously worked with. . My friend who I absolutely trust, was really depressed over our prospects for 2024 because of it, worried about how well Biden could hold up during the upcoming presidential campaign.
As a result I was not as shocked by Biden's poor performance in that debate as I otherwise would have been. It contributed to the stance I took here at the time, which somewhat defended the role Nancy Pelosi played in Biden stepping aside .
I never said a word about what i was told (either before or after Biden's debate) as I knew it would not serve any good purpose to do so. I won't give names now because there's always some chance that doing so could be used by the wrong people against someone on our side. I prefer being an essentially anonymous Democrat making a vague comment on an internet message board containing nothing newsworthy. I knew Joe Biden was an excellent President and I would have voted for him again, but gladly voted for Kamala instead when Biden withdrew.

(195 posts)Like just about everyone else in the media, but I think its important for democrats to learn from what happened. The next few months will be messy. Better to get it out of the way and focus on the midterms.
On edit, I would also hope Tapper has the decency to hold off on any book tour given Bidens cancer diagnosis. It would be in extremely poor taste hyping this book at this time.
