The car bombing outside a California fertility clinic that killed one person and injured four others appears to have been driven by anti-natalist ideology, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the incident.
Anti-natalism refers to the belief that no one should have children. Investigators are focusing on social media posts made by the suspect, including a 30-minute audio recording, which they say support anti-natalist views. While the posts and the recording are still being verified, officials believe they reflect the ideology behind the bombing.
The same person may also be linked to an online forum post from earlier this month in which the individual contemplated suicide using an explosive device, the sources said. They are also investigating a YouTube account, under the same moniker, that features videos of experiments with homemade explosives.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was reportedly dealing with depression and had personal relationship issues. Authorities believe the suspect is a 25-year-old man from Twentynine Palms, three law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.
On Saturday, multiple law enforcement tactical officers were seen outside a Twentynine Palms residence, about an hour away from the targeted fertility clinic. The activity there was connected to the Palm Springs investigation, the sources confirmed to NBC News.

(9,027 posts)I've been a Democrat for decades and I'm on the left end of the Democratic spectrum -- I've never even heard of the damn term "anti-natalist" before. Maybe that's a thing among the Green Party/Horseshoe type of leftists, but it ain't among most sane liberals/progressives.

And - really, really unfortunate - but my guess is we see more of this ...

(56,040 posts)... should attract careful attention from both mental health support and BATF law enforcement. It's enough to get a warrant and then they are likely to find enough for charges, which can be held in abeyance during treatment or convictions suspended conditionally on treatment and good behaviour.
But what the hell does the regime care about lives and suffering when there are DOGEy cuts to make to benefit the One Percenters.

(1,287 posts)Some of the members are rabid anti-birth. They think people that have children are stupid. Of course, They rant and rave if they happen to go to a restaurant to see children with their parents eating a meal. They have always made the hair on the back of neck stand up.

(149,124 posts)I'll have to go explore anti-natalism. I'm completely ignorant about that.

(149,124 posts)That was a personal choice, though, and I don't thing others should necessarily do the same.
My question to anti-natalists would be: "How is it that you are still alive?"
My decision was based on rapidly rising global population numbers. It was something I could do about that. I don't think others should do the same unless they have a moral or ethical belief that they not reproduce.
I had no idea there was such a movement.

(10,621 posts)And I'll say "usually" because we don't have full information on this one yet. But, I see a lot of it in the more extreme hinterlands of eco movements. Think being severely against overpopulation and its effects on the environment.
Although bombing an IVF clinic to make your point is novel as hell. That anti-natalism could go there never crossed my mind. A total inversion of the anti-abortion extremist. I thought they were just cranky anti-social people grousing online.
It's interesting if nothing else.
