get a load of this. built into the tariffs...

"After the event, Trump also signed an executive order closing the de minimis exemption, a little-known carve out that allows packages valued under $800 to enter the US duty free. Ultra cheap retailers like Shein, Temu, and Amazon Haul use the rule as a loophole to keep prices low, and buyers don’t have to pay any taxes that would otherwise apply to their purchases. By ending the exemption, Trump could destabilize the business model that has hooked Americans looking for a deal on China-reliant online retailers." [b/]

I wonder if this will apply to groceries. you know, whole foods...

USPS lacks the personnel to process and collect such duties.

7. DOGE will solve that problem by firing more of them

they'll fire more from IRS and Treasury, Commerce, Customs, and anywhere else that tariffs could be collected. They're super efficient like that. Lean and mean.

sellers. I had a gut feeling about this. Literally just dodged this bullet last week when I made purchases from the UK and Germany.

I'll snoop around eBay later today and try to figure out how this impacts prices, and whether the buyer pays at checkout and if eBay charges the buyer at the point of sale or whether there will be taxes due after delivery. I don't think sellers will pick up the tab.

Oh boy...

This is really petty when you are talking about personal one-on-one transactions between two citizens living in different countries, buying books, CDs, used electronics and pop culture collectibles from Europe, Japan, South Korea, etc...

There are a lot of people around the globe who buy and sell from one another. This will destabilize that trade.

People who trade with one another tend to get along. It's the basis of human civilization. Trump is wrecking that.

Disruption, chaos, and distrust are the point. Half the country is in a state of anger thanks to Trumpism - I guess we're going to see that spread more widely.

15. The sellers probably have a tag line that makes you responsible for tariffs.

I bought a 1960s camera from Japan earlier this year, and that was clear in the description of the item. I did a quick check and determined it was under the limit so I didn't need to worry about it..

But the tariff is paid by the importer, not the seller . . . so if you're still buying goods from overseas, you'll have to pay an additional amount when it enters the country.

4. this should have been bolded: "Trump also signed an executive order closing the de minimis exemption..."

Those glancing at your paragraph might well get the impression that this continues, thereby not impacting smaller value purchases (even if foreign--Chinese origin).

This will be a killer for Walmart, Amazon, and many others. I have mixed feelings, but the fact that it WILL impact food that cannot be grown/produced here does concern and should concern all of us.
